Damp Does Not Bring Bedbugs
Bedbugs arrive with people and their things: a bag, a second-hand chair, a visitor. They are drawn to a sleeping person, not to damp walls or a lack of daylight, and a basement bedroom is no more attractive to them than a top-floor one. A spotless flat can have them and a damp one may never see them.
Basements do suit other small insects that like moisture, and these are often what people find first. Booklice, springtails and some beetles turn up on window sills, in bathrooms and along damp skirtings. The London guide bedbugs or something else helps tell them apart.

What Being Below Ground Changes for Heat
Below street level the walls are usually solid and backed by earth, and the floor may be a slab. Those surfaces stay cool and pull warmth out of the room, so the corners and the bottom of an outside wall are slow to come up. That is where the thermal camera earns its keep: we keep heating and moving air until those cold patches match the rest of the room.
Two things to mention when you book. A dehumidifier or a sump pump in the flat needs to be talked through, as some equipment has to be switched off or moved for the day. And a lightwell with a single door can make it harder to get equipment in, so we plan the route beforehand. Heat treatment is usually one visit and deals with eggs too.
Chemical Treatment in a Lower-Ground Room
A residual insecticide works the same below ground as above it. It goes into mattress seams, bed frames and skirtings, and into the gaps where pipes and cables come through from the flat overhead. Those gaps matter here because the ceiling is shared with the flat above, and bedbugs use the same routes the pipework does.
The floors need to be clear along the walls and the bedding hot-washed. Do not mop the treated edges between visits; a damp floor near the skirting can be wiped carefully around them. See chemical treatment for how the visits are spaced.
Vaults, Under-Stair Cupboards and Storage
Lower-ground flats in Hampstead often come with a front vault, a cupboard under the main staircase or a store off the lightwell. Nobody sleeps in them, but they are where spare mattresses, suitcases and bags of bedding end up. If any of that came from elsewhere shortly before the bites began, tell us, because it may be where the problem started. Leave it in place rather than carrying it through the flat.
Many of the houses in Hampstead are Victorian or Edwardian and split into flats, so the lower-ground flat usually has neighbours overhead. Report it in writing to your landlord or managing agent. Who arranges and pays depends on the tenancy and the cause; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers. The Camden page covers flats inside shared period houses.
Bedbug Control Hampstead — Questions
Is my basement flat damp enough to attract bedbugs?
Damp does not attract them. They follow people, so a dry flat and a damp one are equally at risk if someone brings them in.
Can bedbugs come down from the flat above?
They can travel through gaps around pipes, cables and the edges of the floor above. That is why we treat those gaps in a lower-ground room.
Does heat treatment work in a basement in Hampstead?
Yes, with more attention to the outside walls and the floor, which stay cool longer. The thermal camera shows when they have caught up.
I found tiny pale insects near the window. Are they bedbugs?
Probably not, if they are near damp spots rather than the bed. Keep one in a sealed bag or on clear tape and we can look at it. Inspections start from £120.
