Two Homes Joined by One Holdall
The borough has Kingston University at its centre and quieter suburban streets around it, so plenty of households have a young person who lives in halls or a shared house in term and comes back to a family house in the holidays. Some students do the reverse, living at home and spending nights at a friend’s place near campus.
Bedbugs do not care which address is which. They ride in bags, bedding, pillows and anything soft that shuttles between the two. A problem in a shared student house can reach a parent’s spare room by Christmas, and a problem at home can go back to halls in September. Neither household has done anything wrong; the route is simply open.
The Weeks When Belongings Move
Most of the risk sits in a handful of dates rather than being spread across the year. These are the times to be deliberate about bags and bedding:
- Moving in at the start of the first year, with a car full of duvets and boxes.
- Weekend visits home, especially with a bag of laundry for the family machine.
- The Christmas and Easter breaks, when a whole room’s worth of kit comes back.
- Moving out of halls in the summer, and into a shared house for the next year.
- Friends staying over on sofas and air beds at either end.
None of this means stopping visits. It means knowing which moments carry belongings between two sets of beds, and handling those belongings with a little more care.
When a Student Comes Home
The first ten minutes decide most of it. Have the bags come in to a hard floor downstairs, not up to the bedroom. Laundry goes straight into the machine on the hottest setting the labels allow, and anything that cannot be washed goes in a sealed bag until it can be dried hot or checked. Look along the seams of the holdall and the zip channels before it is put away.

When a Student Goes Back
The same care runs the other way if the family home has had a problem, or is in the middle of treatment. If the Student Room Has Them
A room in halls or a shared house is usually someone else’s building. Report what you have found in writing, to the accommodation office, the landlord or the agent, and keep a copy. Who arranges and pays for treatment depends on the tenancy or licence and on how the bedbugs arrived; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers, but we can speak to whoever is organising the work. Two things help while you wait. The student should keep sleeping in their own bed rather than moving onto a friend’s floor, and should not bring the bedding home to wash. A bag of infested sheets in the family machine is exactly how the problem changes address.
If the Family Home Has Them
In a suburban house, the first reaction is often to rearrange: move the bed to another room, carry the mattress downstairs, send someone to sleep in the lounge. Each of those tends to widen the job. Heat or Chemical Around the Academic Year
Heat raises a room to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive, holds it there while a thermal camera looks for cold spots, and kills the eggs too, so it is usually one visit taking most of a day. That suits a family house where several bedrooms need doing, or a household that wants it finished before a student comes home. It costs more. See heat treatment in the borough.
Chemical treatment puts a residual insecticide into seams, frames and skirtings. It does not reliably kill eggs, so it runs to two visits, sometimes three, around 10 to 14 days apart, with each one taking an hour or two. It costs less and suits a single room or a small rented flat, but the course has to fit the calendar: a student who leaves halls between visits takes the untreated survivors in their luggage. Unpack downstairs on a hard floor, put all the washing straight into a hot wash, and keep the bags out of the bedrooms until their seams have been checked. If you want someone to look over his things, an inspection is the right booking.
