When One Household Becomes Two or Three
A single home with a problem is a contained job. The harder case is a family spread across several addresses, where the same overnight bag, school coat or folded travel cot goes back and forth every week. Treat one house and not the other, and the bugs simply come back on the next Friday handover.
So the first question we ask is not only which room, but who else the people in that room sleep near. Grandparents who babysit, a parent with a second home, an older relative who spends weekends with you: if anyone is moving between beds, their other bed needs checking too. Children moving between two homes have their own page, Southgate, which goes through the handover routine in detail.

Closing the Routes Between Homes
None of this needs special equipment. It is about changing what travels and how, until both ends have been checked and, if needed, treated.
- Keep a separate set of pyjamas and bedding at each address, so nothing fabric crosses over for now.
- Use a hard-sided bag or a sealed plastic box for anything that must travel, and open it on a hard floor away from the beds.
- Hot-wash or tumble-dry clothes from the other house before they go in a drawer.
- Leave soft toys and blankets where they are this week, however much they are missed.
- Tell the other household plainly. Being awkward for one phone call is far better than two homes being treated in turn.
If your work takes you into other people's homes, the same thinking applies to your kit and your coat. The Ponders End page is written for cleaners and carers, and the commercial page for Enfield covers agencies with a team on the road.
If You Cannot Easily Be Out of the House
Plenty of people cannot hand over their home for a day. Someone may be recovering from an operation, caring for a parent upstairs, working night shifts or looking after a baby with a strict routine. Tell us that at the start, because it shapes which treatment makes sense.
Chemical treatment is built from short visits. Each one is one to two hours, the person can stay elsewhere in the house while the treated room is closed, and the room is usable again once the surfaces are dry. It usually takes two visits, sometimes three, spaced about 10 to 14 days apart because the product does not reliably kill eggs. The chemical treatment page for Enfield is written around exactly this kind of household.
Heat treatment needs the treated rooms empty of people and pets for most of a day, but only for one visit in most cases, and it kills the eggs too. If one bedroom is being treated and the rest of the house is fine, a person who cannot go out can often stay downstairs. We talk it through with you rather than assume.
Heat or Chemical for a Family House
Heat raises the whole room to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive and holds it there, with a thermal camera checking for cold spots. Anything that heat would damage, such as aerosols, candles, medication, vinyl, plants and some electronics, comes out beforehand. It costs more than chemical and leaves nothing behind. The heat treatment page for Enfield looks at a whole upstairs done in a day, and who minds the children while it happens.
Chemical puts a residual insecticide into seams, frames and skirtings, and asks you to strip and hot-wash the bedding and clear the floor before each visit. Both routes start from £220, and the actual price depends on how many rooms and which method. You get that figure on the phone, before any date is booked.
Making Sure It Really Is Bedbugs
Houses beside open land sometimes have birds or bats in the roof, and the mites and bugs that live in those nests can bite people too. That needs a different fix, which is why Enfield Lock has a page on telling them apart. An inspection, from £120, confirms what you have before you pay for treatment.
Two other situations confuse people. In some homes only the guests get bitten and the family never reacts, covered on the Cockfosters page. And if you had bedbugs once and every itch now feels like a warning, Palmers Green explains how to tell whether they are really back. For checking a bed yourself tonight, start with how to check your own bed.
Renting, Housing and Who Arranges It
Who books and pays depends on the tenancy and on how the bedbugs arrived. Put it in writing to the landlord, agent or housing officer as soon as you find them, and keep a copy. We are pest controllers rather than legal advisers, but we are happy to deal with whoever is organising the work.
If the landlord lives overseas, Enfield Town covers arranging access at a distance. If you are in council-arranged temporary accommodation, the Edmonton page deals with the housing officer and with moving your belongings on.
Guides Written for Enfield Households
Five guides go deeper on questions families here ask us. If the embarrassment is the hardest part, read are bedbugs a sign of a dirty home. Parents with young children should look at bedbugs in pushchairs, car seats and baby gear. If a house has stood empty or the heating is off, see can bedbugs survive in a cold, unheated house. And once treatment is done, signs bedbug treatment has worked tells you what the next few weeks should look like.

What does bedbug treatment cost in Enfield?
Treatment starts from £220 and an inspection from £120. The number of rooms and the choice of heat or chemical set the final figure, which we quote over the phone before you commit to anything.
My mother babysits and has the grandchildren overnight. Does her house need checking too?
If the children sleep there regularly, yes, it is worth checking her beds. Treating one home while bags and bedding keep crossing to the other is how the problem comes back.
I am housebound. Can you still treat my home?
Usually, yes. Chemical visits are short and you only need to stay out of the room being treated until it is dry; with heat, you may be able to stay in another part of the house. Tell us your situation when you call and follow what we say on the day.
Should I go and stay with family until it is sorted?
Usually not. Moving to someone else's house tends to take the bedbugs with you, and then two households have a problem instead of one.
Can I throw the mattress out to get rid of them?
Please do not, unless we tell you to. Carrying it through the house scatters bugs along the way, and any left in the frame or skirting move straight onto the replacement.
The bites are really itchy. What should I do?
People react very differently, and some show nothing at all. A pharmacist or GP can help with itching or a skin reaction. If anyone has signs of a severe allergic reaction, call 999.
Do I have to tell the other parent or the grandparents?
It is your decision, but they need to know to check their own beds. A short, plain message now saves both homes a longer problem later.
