Can Bedbugs Spread Through Offices and Commercial Buildings?

Our commercial page states the position in a paragraph. This is the longer version, because 'bedbugs in the office' is reported far more often than it is found, and the gap between the two is where the money gets wasted.

What a Bedbug Needs, and What an Office Provides

A breeding population needs a host who is still for several hours at a time, repeatedly, in the same place, with somewhere tight and dark within a couple of metres to retreat to.

An office provides the darkness and the harbourage readily — chair seams, carpet edges, partition voids. What it does not provide is the stillness. People at desks shift constantly, get up, go home. Nobody lies motionless at a workstation for eight hours.

So bedbugs in an office are usually surviving rather than thriving, and their numbers are being topped up from elsewhere rather than growing on site.

What an Office 'Infestation' Usually Turns Out to Be

Across the commercial jobs we attend, the reports resolve into four fairly consistent outcomes.

• Nothing at all. Bites reported, nothing found on inspection, and the cause turns out to be at somebody's home or is not bites
• Something else. Carpet beetle larvae are the usual answer — the hairs cause a reaction that looks very like bites, and the larvae live at carpet edges
• A genuine transport problem. Live bedbugs found, almost always in soft seating, being reintroduced from a home address
• A genuine resident population. Rare, and almost always somewhere people actually sleep — a sleep pod, a first aid couch, a security office with a camp bed, a break room sofa used for naps

That last category is worth dwelling on. When we do find a breeding population in a commercial building, it is nearly always in the one place somebody has been sleeping. Night security is the classic.

How to Tell Which You Have

The distinction is visible if you know what to look at.

• Shed skins and eggs mean breeding. A hitchhiker does not leave those
• Staining in a seam means something has been sitting there long enough to digest a meal — also breeding
• A single adult and nothing else, repeatedly, in different places, means transport
• Finds clustering round one soft item rather than one person's desk usually means transport into that item

Where to Look in a Commercial Interior

• Fabric task chairs — under the seat pan, along the seams, inside the mechanism housing
• Break-out sofas, booths and soft meeting seating
• Sleep pods, first aid couches and anywhere with a blanket
• Coat stores, lockers and the pile where bags end up
• Carpet edges and skirtings within two metres of all of the above
• Cinema, theatre and waiting-room seating, which is a genuine risk in public-facing premises

Why Treating the Office Alone Will Not Work

If the population is being replenished from somebody's home, you can treat the office perfectly and have the same conversation again in six weeks. The treatment was not wrong; the diagnosis was.

The useful work is treating the soft furnishings properly, putting monitors in so you can see whether finds continue, and being honest with the client that ending it means helping somebody deal with it where they sleep.

Public-Facing Premises Are Different

Cinemas, theatres, waiting rooms and transport seating carry a genuinely higher risk, because the public sit still in them for long periods and the turnover of people is enormous. The population is still usually transport rather than resident, but the volume of introductions is far higher and monitoring is worth doing routinely.
