How Soon Do Bedbugs Show Up After Moving In in Croydon?

Bedbugs in a new home rarely announce themselves on the first night. Bites or spotting can take weeks to appear, and by then it is hard to say where they came from.

People often expect a new home to show its problems straight away. With bedbugs it is rarely that simple. A few bugs hiding in the skirting of an empty flat, or a small number carried in with your own furniture, can take a while to build into something anyone notices.

In shortNo signs in the first week does not prove there are none; a check before and soon after moving in tells you far more.

Why It Can Take Weeks

A small number of bedbugs produces a small number of signs. One or two bites can be put down to anything, and some people do not react to bites at all. The dark spotting they leave builds up slowly on seams and joints. Eggs laid on day one take time to hatch and grow. So it is common for the first clear sign to appear some weeks after the keys changed hands.

Moving itself hides things too. New mattresses, unfamiliar furniture and the general disruption mean nobody is looking at the corners of the bed frame for the first few weeks.

What an Empty Flat Can Hide

An empty property with no one sleeping in it has no obvious signs. Bedbugs can go a long time without feeding, so bugs left behind by a previous occupant can sit in skirting boards, carpet edges, behind sockets or in a left-behind bed frame until someone moves in. A fresh coat of paint and a steam-cleaned carpet do not rule them out.

Things worth looking at before your own furniture goes in:

  • Any bed, sofa or chest of drawers left in the property by the last occupant.
  • The edges of the carpet and the gripper rod along the skirting in the bedrooms.
  • Gaps behind skirting boards, door frames and picture rails.
  • Curtain tracks and the backs of any fitted headboard or wardrobe.

You may not find anything even if they are there. That is the value of an inspection from £120 before moving in, particularly if furniture comes with the tenancy. The inspections page for the borough is written for renters and buyers doing exactly that.

Did You Bring Them or Were They Already There?

This matters, especially if you rent, because it can affect who arranges and pays for treatment. There is rarely proof either way, but some patterns point one direction:

  • Signs first appearing on your own mattress and frame, with nothing in rooms you have not used, suggest they came in with you or your belongings.
  • Signs in a bedroom nobody has slept in yet, or on furniture that came with the property, suggest they were there before.
  • A recent trip, second-hand furniture or a removals van shared with other loads are all possible routes in.
  • Bugs turning up along a party wall in a flat can point to next door.

We can tell you what we find and where, but we are pest controllers, not legal advisers. Report it to the landlord or agent in writing as soon as you spot it, and keep photos of what you found and when.

Protecting the Next Move

  1. Check your own bed, sofa and bags before the move, not after.
  2. Wash and dry bedding and clothes hot before they are packed.
  3. Keep packed soft items sealed in bags rather than loose in boxes.
  4. Unpack the bedrooms first and look at the frame joints and mattress seams as you assemble them.
  5. Check again after a few weeks, when a small problem would first show.

If you do find something, keep sleeping in the bed rather than moving to another room, and do not throw the mattress out unless we advise it. The Croydon page covers what both sides need to do so a first treatment is the only one, and the storage beds guide is worth reading if your new bedroom came with one.

Questions

Related Questions

We have been in two weeks and found bites. Could we have brought them?

Possibly, or they may have been there already. Look at where the signs are and what furniture is involved, and tell the landlord or agent in writing. An inspection shows how far it has gone.

The flat was empty for months. Would any bedbugs have died?

Not reliably. Bedbugs can survive a long time without feeding, so an empty property is not proof there are none.

Should I get an inspection before moving in?

It is worth it if furniture comes with the property or anything about it worries you. Inspections start at £120.

Who pays if they were already there?

That depends on the tenancy and the cause. Report it in writing. We are pest controllers, not legal advisers, but we can speak to whoever arranges the work.
