Why Salvage Can Carry Them
Bedbugs are flat and like tight, dry gaps close to where people sleep. A door that hung in a bedroom for decades has a split in its panel moulding, a hinge rebate and screw holes. Old boards have nail holes and shrinkage gaps along the tongue. A reclaimed bed or headboard has joints that were never glued. Any of those can hold bedbugs and their eggs.
They can also go a long time between feeds, so a door that has been standing in a yard or a storage unit is not automatically clear. Where the timber came from matters more than how long ago.

Check It Before It Comes Indoors
Do the checking outside, in a garage, or on a sheet on the path, with a bright torch and a card or an old bank card to run along gaps:
- Dark spotting along joints, mouldings and the edges of panels
- Pale shed skins caught in cracks, hinge rebates and screw holes
- Tiny cream-coloured eggs stuck into rough grain or splits
- Live insects, flat and brown, often in the tightest gap they can find
- The same signs on any fittings that came with it: handles, hinges, brackets
Pieces that have been bedroom furniture deserve the closest look. Bed frames, headboards and chests of drawers are where bedbugs live in a home, so they are where they travel from. Our guide on bedbugs in chests of drawers shows where to look on case furniture.
If You Find Signs
Do not bring it inside to deal with later. Wood cannot go in a washing machine, and a spray from a shop will not reach into splits and joints. Keep it outside, wrapped if you can, and ring us. We can talk through the options for that piece; ask when you ring what is possible for items that have not come into the house yet.
If you are not sure whether what you see is bedbug spotting or old paint and dirt, an inspection from £120 answers that before you spend anything on treatment.
If It Is Already Fitted
When reclaimed timber is already on the wall or the door is already hung, the room is treated with it in place. Heat treatment raises the whole room, including the wood, to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive, and the thermal camera is used to find the cold spots that thick timber can create. Chemical treatment puts residual insecticide into the joints and edges, usually over two or three visits. Heat costs more; both start from £220.
When you ring about a home in South Norwood, tell us what the salvage is, where it is now, and whether anyone has been bitten. The Croydon borough page covers what makes a treatment work the first time.
Bedbug Control South Norwood — Questions
Does sanding or painting old timber get rid of bedbugs?
Sanding the surface does not reach into joints and cracks, and paint can seal eggs in a gap rather than kill them. Check and deal with it first.
Can I leave reclaimed wood in the garden until the bedbugs die?
They can survive a long time without feeding, so leaving it out is not a reliable fix. Ring us before you rely on it.
Will heat treatment damage an old door or floorboards?
Timber is normally fine, but some finishes, glues and anything vinyl can be affected. Tell us what is in the room and we will say what needs to come out.
Is architectural salvage more of a risk than new wood?
Only because of where it has been. New timber has no history; reclaimed pieces have spent years in someone else's building, and the joints give bedbugs somewhere to hide.
