Why Quiet Rooms Get Missed
Most people find out they have bedbugs from bites. A room nobody sleeps in produces no bites, so the first sign often turns up somewhere else: a visiting relative who wakes up marked, or a bedroom next to the quiet one where someone has started reacting.
By then the unused room may have held them for a while. Bedbugs that have lost their last host do not stay put for ever. They wander in search of the next one, along skirtings and under doors, towards whoever is sleeping nearest.

Going Round the House
Before you ring, do one walk round every room with a bed, sofa or daybed in it, including the ones you have not opened for a month:
- Start with the room nearest the bites and work outwards.
- Lift each mattress and look along the piping, the label and the corners of the base.
- Check the frame joints and headboard where they meet, with a torch.
- Open storage beds and drawers, since quiet rooms tend to fill with stored things. See ottoman and storage beds for what to look at.
- Write down what you found in each room, even if it is nothing. That list shapes the quote.
How Many Rooms to Treat
The price depends on the number of rooms, so there is a natural pull towards treating as few as possible. The risk is leaving out a quiet room that has them and paying twice. Treating every room in a large house regardless costs more than it needs to.
The middle way is to confirm first. An inspection from £120 goes through the rooms and tells you which are affected, so the treatment covers those and the ones directly next to them. Rooms that are clean are left alone.
Heat or Chemical in a Larger House
When several rooms on one floor are involved, heat treatment can do them in a day and deals with eggs at the same time, which suits rooms that are hard to keep an eye on afterwards. It costs more than chemical. Chemical treatment suits one or two affected rooms, with follow-up visits about 10–14 days apart. Either way, stored clutter in a quiet room is the main thing that slows the work, so thin it out and bag it before the day.
After Treatment
Put the quiet rooms on a routine. Look at their beds every week or two for the first couple of months, and check the guest bed again after anyone stays. When you ring about a house in Purley, tell us how many rooms have beds in them and which ones are in regular use. Treatments are from £220. The Croydon borough page covers what helps a treatment work the first time.
Bedbug Control Purley — Questions
If I shut the door on the spare room, will that keep them in?
No. They move under doors and along skirtings, and a room with no one in it gives them a reason to go looking.
Do you need to see every room, even ones we never use?
Yes, if there is any chance they are affected. A room nobody uses is the one where signs can sit unnoticed.
Can we leave the unused rooms until later?
If they are clear, there is nothing to treat. If they have signs, leaving them out means the rest of the house can be reinfested from them.
Will you move our stored boxes?
Please thin out and bag stored things before the day, and leave the furniture where it is. Ask when you ring if something is too heavy to handle.
How is the price worked out for a big house?
By the number of rooms treated and whether it is heat or chemical. Treatments start from £220, and you get the figure on the phone before anything is booked.
