What Happens After a Professional Bedbug Chemical Treatment?

Nobody tells you this part, so people fill the gap with the internet at two in the morning. Here is the honest version.

The Same Day

Surfaces need a few hours to dry and then the room is yours. There is no airing-out period and nothing to wipe down — wiping is actively unhelpful, because the residue is the treatment.

You may see a bedbug moving about in the open in the hours afterwards, behaving oddly. That is a good sign rather than a bad one: insects that have picked up a dose come out of harbourage and move erratically. A room where nothing at all appears is not necessarily a cleaner room.

Night One: Sleep in the Bed

This is the single most important instruction and the one most often ignored, because it feels wrong.

Bedbugs go where the sleeper is. The treated bed is now the most dangerous place in the property for a bedbug and the safest for you. Move to the sofa and you become bait in an untreated room, and in a fortnight the living room is part of the problem.

Days One to Seven

• Expect the occasional live bedbug. They are coming out to feed and crossing the residue to do it
• Bites may continue for a few days, and may even seem worse — disturbed insects feed more erratically
• Do not deep-clean the treated surfaces. Hoover the floor by all means; leave skirtings and frames alone
• Do not use any shop-bought spray. It repels bedbugs out of the treated harbourages into voids you cannot reach
• Keep the bedding routine simple: wash hot, tumble dry hot, put it straight back on

Days Seven to Fourteen

Activity should be dropping noticeably. What is happening underneath is that the eggs laid before the treatment are hatching, and the hatchlings are emerging into a room with a residual barrier in it.

This is the window the second visit is timed for, and it is why the gap exists.

The Second Visit

Shorter than the first, because it is mostly inspection. We look at the same places, judge what has hatched and what has survived, and re-treat accordingly. If we have left interceptors under the bed legs, this is when they get read.

Weeks Three to Six

Activity should be finished. Bites stop, though the marks themselves can take a fortnight to fade and some people react for longer, which makes skin a poor measure of anything.

Judge it on evidence instead: no fresh dark spotting appearing on clean bedding, nothing live in the seams or the frame joints when you look properly with a torch, nothing on the interceptors.

When to Ring Us Rather Than Wait

• Live bedbugs in numbers more than a fortnight after the second visit
• Fresh spotting appearing on bedding you have washed since the treatment
• Bites starting in a room that was not treated
• Anyone in the household having moved where they sleep — tell us, it changes the plan
• Anything that does not match the shape of this timeline

None of those are awkward phone calls to make. All of them are cheaper to deal with in week three than in month three.
