Thermal Pest Control — bedbug control in Bexley, chemical and heat treatments

Bedbug Control Thamesmead

What a concrete block means for how we treat a flat.

Thamesmead was built from the late 1960s, much of it in concrete. That construction changes how bedbugs move through a building and how each treatment behaves, so it is worth understanding before you choose.

How Bedbugs Move in a Concrete Block

Solid concrete floors and walls do not give bedbugs much to live in. The gaps are elsewhere: around pipes and cables that pass between flats, in service ducts and risers, behind skirtings, along door frames, and where later partitions meet the original structure.

Those routes run between homes, so a problem in one flat can be fed from the one above, below or next door. Report it to the housing provider or landlord in writing and say which flats share a wall or ceiling with yours. Who arranges and pays depends on the tenancy and the cause; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers.

Heat in a Concrete Flat

Concrete takes a great deal of heat to warm up and draws heat away from the room. External walls and floors over open walkways are the hardest. That means a heat treatment in a flat like this needs enough equipment for the space and careful work with the thermal camera along the walls and floor edges, where cold spots are most likely.

It still has the advantage of killing eggs in one visit, which helps where getting access for repeat visits is difficult. Because heat leaves nothing behind, and the building is shared, we normally add a light residual at the edges and around pipe entries afterwards. More on the process on the heat treatment page.

Chemical in a Concrete Flat

A residual insecticide suits the shared routes well. It goes into the skirtings, the gaps around pipework, the bed frame and the mattress seams, and keeps working against anything that arrives from next door after we leave.

The course is usually two, sometimes three visits about 10–14 days apart. Between them, keep the floors clear and do not vacuum along the treated edges. The chemical treatment page covers the gap between visits.

Choosing Between Them

In a Thamesmead flat the choice often comes down to two things: whether neighbouring flats are being dealt with, and whether you can give access for more than one visit. If other flats have them and nothing is being done there, a residual is useful whichever route you take. If you are unsure whether it is bedbugs at all, an inspection starts at £120 and settles that first. For the wider borough picture, see the Bexley bedbug control page.

Whichever you choose, the preparation in a flat is the same in spirit: bedding stripped and hot-washed, the floor cleared along the walls, furniture left in place, and nothing carried out to a neighbour or a communal bin store before we have seen it. If you share the flat, everyone in it needs to know the plan, because one person moving onto a friend's sofa in another block can start the whole thing again somewhere else in Thamesmead. Bites vary from person to person; a pharmacist or GP can advise on skin reactions, and 999 is for signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Questions

Bedbug Control Thamesmead — Questions

Can bedbugs come through concrete walls?

Not through solid concrete, but through the gaps around pipes, cables, ducts and door frames that pass between flats.

Is heat treatment harder in a concrete flat?

It takes more effort because concrete soaks up heat. It is done by bringing in enough equipment and checking the walls and floor edges with the thermal camera until they catch up.

Should I report it to the housing provider?

Yes, in writing, with the date and the rooms affected. They may want neighbouring flats checked.

What does treating a flat cost?

Treatments start at £220, depending on the number of rooms and on heat or chemical. You get the figure before anything is booked.
