Why Bed-Swapping Spreads Them
Bedbugs stay close to where someone sleeps and follow whoever they have been feeding on. When a child moves from their bed to yours in the small hours, bugs can come with pyjamas, a blanket or a favourite toy. They do not live on the child, as our guide on whether bedbugs live on people explains, but they do hitch a ride in fabric.
The result is that a family with a single affected bed can have three within a month, even though nobody moved any furniture. Children who share a room, or who top-and-tail on a mattress when cousins stay, add further routes of their own.

Work Out Who Has Slept Where
Before you ring us about a house in Rayners Lane, sit down and write a rough list of the last few weeks: which child slept in which bed, who came into yours, and any sleepovers or nights at grandparents. It feels fiddly, but it tells us which beds to check most carefully and often explains bites that do not seem to fit.
Then check every bed on that list, not only the one where bites were first noticed. Look at the mattress seams, the joints of the frame and any bunk bed ladders or slats. Children’s beds with storage drawers underneath are worth emptying and checking too.
Keeping Children in Their Own Beds
This is the hard part, and it only has to last until the treatment is done.
- Explain it simply. Tell older children that everyone sleeps in their own bed for a while so the house can be sorted out. Keep it calm and matter-of-fact.
- Go to them instead. If a child wakes, sit with them in their room rather than bringing them into yours.
- Hot-wash the comfort items. Toys and blankets that travel between beds go in a hot wash or a hot tumble dryer, then back to their owner.
- Pause sleepovers. Both at home and away, until the house has been treated.
Bites on children can look alarming. If the skin is sore or infected, ask a pharmacist or GP, and call 999 for any sign of a severe allergic reaction.
Treating Several Bedrooms at Once
When more than one bed is affected, heat treatment across the bedrooms is often the most practical choice in Rayners Lane. It is usually one visit, kills the eggs too, and does not rely on children keeping to a routine for two or three weeks. It costs more. Chemical treatment can work if only one or two beds are involved and you can keep the floors clear between visits. Treatments start from £220, and the Harrow page covers busy family homes more widely.
Bedbug Control Rayners Lane — Questions
My child has bites and I do not. Does that mean it is only their bed?
Not necessarily. Some people do not react to bites at all, so check your own bed as well.
Should I get rid of the bunk beds?
Usually not. Bunk beds can be treated where they stand. Taking them apart and carrying them out can spread bedbugs through the house.
Can my children go to school as normal?
Yes. Bedbugs live in beds and furniture, not on people. Clean clothes from a sealed bag are fine to wear.
What about the family bed?
Check it as carefully as the children’s. It is often the one every child has visited at some point.
How do you price several bedrooms in Rayners Lane?
By the number of rooms and whether it is heat or chemical. Treatments start at £220 and the figure is given on the phone before booking.
