Why These Rooms Are Different
A room used for sleeping and for living has more people passing through it than an upstairs bedroom. The family walks through to the garden, visitors sit on the bed as if it were a sofa, and bags get dropped on it. Each of those can carry bedbugs out into the rest of the house.
The furniture is often different too. Sofa beds, daybeds, rattan chairs and futons all have joints, folds and woven gaps where bedbugs sit. A metal sofa bed mechanism can hide a surprising number of them.

Heat Treatment in a Glass Room
With heat treatment the room is raised to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive and held there. A conservatory with large areas of glazing and a thin roof loses heat faster than a brick bedroom, so tell us about the roof, the glazing and the floor when you ring. We check the room with a thermal camera for cold spots, and those are more likely at the corners and along the base of the frames.
Plants are the other point. Many conservatories are full of them, and plants come out before a heat treatment, along with aerosols, candles, medication, vinyl and some electronics. Blinds that sit inside the glazing are worth mentioning too. Heat costs more than chemical and is usually one visit.
Chemical Treatment in an Extension
Tiled or laminate floors and fewer skirtings can make chemical treatment straightforward. The residue goes into the sofa bed mechanism, the frame joints and the edges where the floor meets the wall. The room has to stay clear of clutter between visits, which means finding somewhere else for the things that usually live in a conservatory, from garden cushions to toys. Expect two, sometimes three, visits.
Rattan and wicker furniture is worth mentioning when you ring. The weave has countless small gaps where bedbugs can sit, so we look at each piece and tell you how it will be dealt with. A futon mattress can usually be treated like any other; the slatted base underneath needs as much attention as the mattress itself.
While You Wait
Whoever sleeps in a Harrow Weald conservatory should keep sleeping there, and the rest of the family should stop using the bed as a seat. Keep garden cushions and throws off it and wash the bedding hot. If the room is warm and damp, that is not why the bedbugs arrived; our guide on damp and bedbugs explains why. Treatments start from £220, and the price for your room in Harrow Weald is given on the phone. For a relative moving in, see the Stanmore page; for the wider picture, the Harrow page.
Bedbug Control Harrow Weald — Questions
Can a conservatory really be heat treated?
In most cases, yes. We plan around the glazing and roof and check for cold spots with a thermal camera. Tell us how the room is built when you ring.
Should the person sleeping there move upstairs for now?
No. That usually takes bedbugs upstairs with them. Keep them in the conservatory bed until it is treated.
Does a sofa bed need replacing?
Usually not. The mechanism and cushions can be treated where they are. Moving it out through the house risks spreading them.
Is the rest of the house in Harrow Weald at risk?
It can be, because conservatory bedrooms have so many people passing through. We check the rooms next to it and the sofas the family uses.
Do you need the plants moved for chemical treatment?
Not always, but they need to be away from the areas we treat, and out altogether for heat.
