Why a Workspace Can Have Bedbugs at All
Bedbugs live where people rest for long enough to be fed on. A sofa in a studio that somebody naps on most afternoons will do. So will a futon on a mezzanine, or a sleeping bag rolled out on the same spot every few weeks. The space does not have to be a home; it has to have a regular sleeper.
Around Deptford Creek there are workspaces of all shapes, and the principle is the same in every one: find where people sleep or lie down, and that is where the inspection starts.

What Gets Treated in a Studio
We treat the sleeping area and the furniture around it, not the whole building by default. That usually means the bed or sofa, the floor edges and skirtings nearby, and anything stored within reach of it: boxes, rolled canvases, stacked chairs, soft furnishings.
- Chemical works well where the sleeping spot is small and contained. It goes into seams, frames and skirtings, and you are back in once it is dry. Two, sometimes three, visits about 10–14 days apart.
- Heat treats the whole space in one go, eggs included, and suits a cluttered room where the hiding places are hard to reach by hand. It takes most of a day, and some things have to come out first.
Materials, Equipment and Heat
Workspaces hold things a bedroom does not. Before a heat treatment we go through what has to come out: aerosols, candles, medication, vinyl, some electronics and plants, and anything in the studio you are unsure about. If you work with materials that might soften, warp or give off fumes when warm, tell us on the phone and we will say whether heat is the right route or whether chemical makes more sense.
With chemical, the question runs the other way: what should not have residual insecticide on it. Work surfaces, food areas and materials you handle all day are kept clear, and we treat the sleeping area and its surroundings. Follow the instructions we give you on the day.
Taking Them Home, and Who Arranges It
A studio where someone sleeps is a route to their home, and the reverse. A bag, a coat or a blanket that moves between the two can carry bedbugs both ways. If you sleep at the studio and at home, both places need checking, and treating one while ignoring the other rarely holds.
Who books the work depends on how the space is let. A tenant of a single unit can usually arrange their own treatment; in a shared building, the managing agent should know, in writing, because neighbouring units may need looking at. For businesses and multi-unit sites, the commercial treatment page and the workplace guide cover the wider approach. Other Deptford-area homes are covered from the Lewisham borough page.
Bedbug Control Deptford — Questions
Can bedbugs live in a studio if nobody lives there?
Only where someone rests or sleeps regularly. A studio that is never slept in is an unlikely place for them to settle, though they can be carried through it.
Do you treat the whole building?
Not by default. We treat the sleeping area and what surrounds it, and say plainly if neighbouring units need looking at too.
Will heat damage my work or materials?
Some things should come out first. Tell us what is in the space when you ring and we will give you the list, or suggest chemical if heat is the wrong fit.
I sleep at the studio and at home. Which do you treat?
Usually both need an inspection. Treating one while the other still has bedbugs lets them travel back.
