Nobody Needs to Be Blamed
The first worry is usually awkward rather than practical: did the visitors bring them, or did they find them here? In most cases nobody can say, and it does not change the treatment. Suitcases, a hospital bag, second-hand baby equipment or a sofa bed that has not been opened for a year are all possible routes.
What matters is finding out which rooms are affected. A guest bed can have bedbugs while the nursery is clear, and the reverse is also possible. An inspection answers that before anyone starts washing the whole house.

The Guest Room and the Nursery
Start with the bed the grandparents are using. Look along the mattress seams and piping, under the label, and into the corners of the frame or the sofa-bed mechanism. Then check the cot, the changing area and the chair used for night feeds, because that chair is where adults sit still for long stretches in the dark.
- If only the guest bed shows signs, treatment may be limited to that room.
- If the feeding chair or the main bedroom shows spotting too, the job is wider, and heat across those rooms is often the simpler route.
- If the nursery is involved, tell us when you ring so we can explain what happens with the cot and the baby's things.
Keeping the Visit Going
There is usually no need to cut the stay short. Sending visitors home early with their luggage packed in a hurry is one of the easier ways to move bedbugs to a second address. Better to keep everyone in their own beds, bag and hot-wash the bedding, and get the treatment booked.
When they do go home, their cases and clothes should be checked and washed or tumble-dried first. Our guide on whether bedbug bites are contagious explains why the bites themselves do not pass between people but the bugs travel in belongings.
Treatment Around a Newborn
With heat, everyone, including the baby and any pets, is out of the treated rooms for most of a day, and the rooms are usable once they have cooled. Medication, formula powders, creams and anything else that could be affected by heat come out beforehand; we give you the list. The Redbridge heat treatment page covers how a day like that is organised in a house.
With chemical, visits are shorter, but there are usually two or three about 10 to 14 days apart and the rooms are out of use until the surfaces are dry each time. Either way, follow the instructions given on the day about when the baby can go back into a room. Bites on a baby or an older relative should be seen by a pharmacist or GP, and signs of a severe allergic reaction mean calling 999.
For a house in Wanstead, the quote depends mainly on how many rooms are affected, so counting the feeding chair and the sofa bed in matters when you ring.
Bedbug Control Wanstead — Questions
Should the grandparents stay somewhere else?
Usually not. Moving someone who is being bitten into another bed or another house tends to take the bedbugs with them. Keep sleeping arrangements as they are until the rooms are treated.
Is the cot mattress treated or replaced?
Do not throw it out before we have looked. Tell us about it when you ring and we will explain what to do with the cot and its bedding for the treatment you choose.
Can we use the Wanstead nursery on the day of treatment?
Not while a treatment is running in it. For heat, the room is ready once it has cooled; for chemical, once the surfaces are dry. We tell you on the day when it can be used.
How much does it cost to treat the guest room and the nursery?
Treatments start from £220. The figure depends on the number of rooms and whether it is heat or chemical, and it is given on the phone before anything is booked.
The grandparents are being bitten but we are not. Why?
People react very differently and some do not react at all, so it may be in more than one bed. The bites alone cannot tell you where the bugs are; the signs on the beds can.
