What Really Has to Be Done
Preparation lists can look endless. Stripped down, there are three jobs: get bedding and the clothes people are wearing washed and sealed, get the floors of the affected rooms clear, and, for heat, take out the few things heat can damage. Everything else is secondary.
You do not need to empty every cupboard in the house, and you do not need to move furniture. Beds and wardrobes stay where they are for both treatments.

A Plan Over Three Evenings
- Evening one: bedding. Strip the affected beds in the morning once everyone is up, bag everything in the room and start the washing. Fresh bags for the clean loads.
- Evening two: clothes and school things. Wash or tumble-dry the clothes for the next fortnight and seal them. Check school bags and coats along the seams. Other clothes can wait until we have said whether they need attention.
- Evening three: floors. Lift everything off the floor into sealed bags or plastic tubs. If there are cardboard boxes under the beds, swap them; our guide on bedbugs in cardboard boxes explains why.
Older children can bag their own soft toys and clothes if you show them how to tie a bag in the room before it is carried out. It gets them involved without handing them the worry.
Choosing the Treatment That Fits Your Week
Heat is usually one visit. The preparation happens once and the house is back to normal sooner, which counts for a lot when you are doing it alone. You will need to be out of the treated rooms, with the children and any pets, for most of a day. It costs more than chemical. See the Redbridge heat treatment page.
Chemical costs less and each visit is an hour or two, but it is usually two, sometimes three visits about 10 to 14 days apart, with the bedding and floors kept in order between them. If money is tight and you can manage that routine, it works well on a contained problem. The chemical treatment page covers the visits.
The price is given on the phone before anything is booked, so you can decide with the figures in front of you.
Looking After Yourself and the Children
Keep everyone sleeping in their own beds. Bringing the children into your bed, or everyone camping in the living room, usually spreads them to another room. If a child's bites are sore or infected, a pharmacist or GP can advise; call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction.
For households in Goodmayes, the most useful thing to tell us is which beds have signs and what days you can be in. If you are waiting to see whether it clears up on its own, read what happens if you ignore bedbugs first.
Bedbug Control Goodmayes — Questions
Can I do the preparation over a few days?
Yes. Spreading it across several evenings is fine as long as it is finished before the visit. Bedding and floors are the priority.
Do I need to wash every piece of clothing in the house?
No. Wash and seal what the family is wearing now and anything stored in the affected rooms that we say needs it. Clothes elsewhere can usually wait.
Can the children stay at school or with family on heat day?
That is often the easiest arrangement. Nothing from the treated rooms should go with them in an unchecked bag, and we will tell you when the rooms are ready again.
How much does treatment cost in Goodmayes?
Treatments start from £220. The figure depends on how many rooms are involved and whether it is heat or chemical, and you get it on the phone before anything is booked.
