Where the Myth Comes From
Damp gets blamed for a lot of problems in a house, and some small insects really are drawn to it, so it is natural to assume any bug in a bedroom has something to do with moisture. There is also a lingering idea that pests go with neglect. Bedbugs break both assumptions.
They do not come up through floors, grow in wet corners or appear from mould. Every bedbug in a house either walked in from next door or was carried in inside something: luggage, furniture, a bag of clothes, a second-hand mattress.
What Bedbugs Actually Need
- A person to feed on. Blood is their only food, so they live where people sleep or sit for long periods.
- Tight hiding places close by. Seams, joints, cracks in timber, the gap behind a skirting, the underside of a drawer.
- A way in. Something brought into the house, or a route from a neighbouring home.
Notice what is missing from that list. Moisture, dirt, food crumbs and clutter do not feature. Clutter can give them more places to hide and make treatment harder, but it does not bring them.

Insects That Do Like Damp
If you have small creatures in a damp room, they are more likely to be one of these than bedbugs. None of them bites people.
- Silverfish, quick, silvery and wingless, found in bathrooms, kitchens and under sinks.
- Booklice, tiny and pale, feeding on mould on damp paper, walls and stored food.
- Springtails, very small and jumping, around wet soil, plants and window frames.
- Woodlice, grey and armoured, wandering in from the garden to cool, damp corners.
Those problems do respond to fixing the damp: better ventilation, a leak repaired, a wall allowed to dry out. Bedbugs will not, because nothing about their life depends on it, and a room that has been dried out completely can hold them just as well as before. If you are unsure what you have, the London guide on bedbugs or something else helps, and a specimen in a sealed bag or pot is worth keeping.
Why a Dry, Clean House Still Gets Them
A newly built extension with fresh plaster and good heating is just as open to bedbugs as an old back bedroom, because the thing that matters is who sleeps there and what came into it. A bed moved in from another home, a relative’s cases, a mattress bought for the new room: any of these can carry them.
A very clean house can actually hide a problem for longer. People who vacuum often and change their bedding regularly may still miss the spotting in a mattress seam, and assume the bites are from something else. Our guide on why bites can appear days later explains why the marks are misleading too.
Why It Matters to Get This Right
Believing bedbugs come from damp leads to the wrong spending. People buy dehumidifiers, redecorate, strip wallpaper or throw out furniture, and the bugs stay in the bed frame the whole time. Others feel ashamed and put off calling anyone, which gives a small problem time to spread.
A conservatory or extension used as a bedroom sometimes does have condensation, and that is worth sorting for its own sake. It is a separate job from bedbugs; the Harrow Weald page covers treating that kind of room. For the house as a whole, the Harrow bedbug control page sets out heat and chemical treatment, from £220.
Related Questions
Will a dehumidifier get rid of bedbugs?
No. Bedbugs do not depend on moisture. A dehumidifier may help with silverfish or booklice, but it will not affect bedbugs.
Does having bedbugs mean my house is dirty?
No. Bedbugs feed on blood, not on dirt or food, and they turn up in very clean homes. They arrive with people and their belongings.
I have small insects in the bathroom. Are they bedbugs?
Probably not. Bathrooms more often have silverfish or other damp-loving insects. Bedbugs stay close to where people sleep or sit.
