How They Reach a Room Next to the Stairs

Bedbugs mostly travel in belongings, but inside a block they also move along walls. A bedroom next to the stairwell has gaps where pipes and cables pass through, a skirting that runs along a shared wall and a front door a few steps away. Furniture carried up and down the stairs brushes that wall on every move.

None of that means the stairwell is infested. It means that when a flat in the block has them, the rooms along the shared routes are the ones worth checking first.

A lift adds its own traffic. Removal crews, delivery drivers and neighbours with shopping all wait on the landing outside your door, and bags get put down against the wall while the doors open. It is ordinary life in a block, and the reason the edge of that room gets a closer look.

What to Check in the Bedroom

• The skirting along the wall that backs onto the stairs or lift, especially at the corners
• Anywhere a pipe, cable or vent comes through that wall
• The frame of the bedroom door and the flat’s front door
• The bed frame and headboard if the bed stands against the shared wall
• Plug sockets and light switches on that wall, looked at from outside only

Bringing in the Managing Agent

Report it in writing to the managing agent or housing provider, and say which room it is and that it adjoins the communal area. They may want to look at the flats either side and above. Who arranges and pays depends on the tenancy or lease and the cause; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers.

It also helps to let the neighbours on the same landing know, calmly and without blame. A flat that is treated while the one next door is not tends to see them again.

Treating a Bedroom on a Shared Wall

Chemical treatment puts residual insecticide into the seams, frames and skirtings, and the residue along the shared wall keeps working after we leave. That is often the sensible choice for a room like this. It is usually two, sometimes three visits about 10–14 days apart.

Heat treatment clears everything in the room in one visit, eggs included, but leaves nothing behind, so in a block a light residual is usually added at the edges, including the wall by the stairs.
