Retrace the Visit
Write down where your guest slept, where they sat in the evenings and where their bag lived. Bedbugs travel in luggage, coats and bedding, and they tend to leave a suitcase near the place it was opened. A bag left on the spare bed is a bigger concern than one that stayed on the hall floor.
Then think about what left with them and what stayed: a borrowed dressing gown, the spare duvet, a sofa bed that has since been folded away. Anything that went home with them is their concern; anything they used and left here is yours to check. If they came by car and you gave them a lift, the seats are worth a quick look as well.
What to Do This Week
- Strip the spare bed and bag the bedding in the room, then hot-wash and tumble-dry it on the hottest setting the labels allow.
- Look at the bed with a torch: mattress seams, the corners of the base, frame joints and the headboard fixings.
- Check the chair or sofa they used, down the sides of the cushions and along the underside.
- Leave the room as it is otherwise. Do not move the mattress or the bed out, and do not start sleeping in there to test it.

Why One Look Is Not Enough
If only a few bugs or eggs were left behind, there may be nothing to see for a while. Eggs take time to hatch, and young bugs are tiny and pale. In a spare room that nobody sleeps in, they may also stay tucked away because there is nobody to feed on.
So look again after a couple of weeks and again after a month, in the same places. If you or anyone else starts waking with new bites, note the date. Our Sutton guide on how long bedbug bites last explains why a single mark is not proof either way, and when to see a pharmacist or GP.
Confirm Before You Pay for Treatment
There is no point treating a house on suspicion alone. If you find spotting, skins or a live bug, or want certainty, an inspection starts from £120 and tells you whether there is anything to treat.
If there is, it is usually caught early in a case like this, often in one room. Heat treatment deals with the whole room, eggs included, in one visit; chemical treatment costs less but needs two or three visits. Both start from £220.
Your guest did the right thing by telling you. If you want to reassure them, or work out whether they can visit again while they are dealing with it, the guide on telling friends covers both sides.
Bedbug Control Cheam — Questions
Do I definitely have bedbugs if my guest had them?
No. Many visits leave nothing behind. The only way to know is to look carefully over the following weeks, or have the room inspected.
Should I throw out the spare mattress in Cheam to be safe?
Please do not. Carrying it through the house can spread anything in it, and it may be clear. Check it or have it checked first.
How long should I keep checking?
Look again after a couple of weeks and after a month. Eggs take a while to hatch, so a clean first check does not settle it.
Can my guest come back while they are having treatment?
That is between you, but it is reasonable to ask them to wait until their treatment is finished, or to bring as little as possible and keep bags off beds.
