A bedbug bite is the body’s reaction to the saliva the insect injects while feeding. The bite itself is painless and over quickly; everything you see and feel afterwards is your own immune response. That is why two people bitten in the same bed can have such different experiences.
Why It Varies So Much
Some people never react at all and only find out they have bedbugs when a partner wakes up covered. Some get a small pink mark that has gone by the next day. Others get raised, hot, intensely itchy welts that take a week or two to settle. A few react more with each round of bites as their body becomes sensitised to them.
Timing varies too. Marks can show up the next morning, or not for a day or two, which makes it hard to know exactly which night you were bitten. Children and people with sensitive skin often react more visibly.
So if one person in the house has marks that linger and another has none, it does not mean the bugs prefer one of you. It usually means one body reacts and the other does not, and both of you are being bitten.
Why Scratching Makes It Last Longer
Scratching feels like relief for a few seconds and then makes the itch worse. It inflames the skin, can break it, and gives germs from under the nails a way in. A bite that would have faded in a few days can turn into a sore that lingers for weeks and sometimes leaves a mark.
- Keep nails short, especially children’s.
- A cool, damp cloth on a bite can take the edge off the itch.
- Ask a pharmacist what is suitable to calm itching, and follow the instructions on anything you use.
- Loose cotton night clothes rub less than synthetic ones.

When New Marks Mean New Bites
Old bites fade; they do not multiply. If fresh marks keep appearing, you are still being bitten. After chemical treatment, a few new bites in the first days are expected as hatching young cross the treated surfaces, which is why there is a second visit. After heat, new bites in the treated room are worth a phone call.
- Photograph the bites on the first morning you notice them.
- Draw a ring round each with a skin-safe pen if it helps you keep track.
- Check again the next morning: marks without a ring are new.
- Write down which bed and which room, and tell us.
A simple record like this is useful at an inspection and after treatment. The London guide on why bedbugs reappear after treatment explains the usual reasons for new marks later on.
When to Get Medical Advice
A pharmacist can help with ordinary itching. See a GP if a bite looks infected, with spreading redness, warmth or pus, if the rash covers a large area, or if marks are not settling after a couple of weeks. Call 999 if anyone has swelling of the lips, face or throat, or trouble breathing. Our guide to whether bedbugs spread disease covers the wider health question.
Stopping the Bites
Bites keep coming until the bedbugs are dealt with. If you have not confirmed what is biting you, an inspection from £120 will. If you have, the borough page explains how to keep the problem to one bedroom in the meantime, and treatment starts from £220.
Related Questions
How long do bedbug bites usually take to go?
For many people a few days, for some a week or two. Scratching makes them last longer.
Why do I have bites and my partner has none?
People react differently to the bites. Your partner may be bitten just as often and simply not show it.
Can bites appear days after I was bitten?
Yes. Some reactions take a day or two to show, so a mark does not always tell you which night it happened.
When should I see a doctor?
If a bite looks infected, the rash is widespread or marks are not settling. Call 999 for swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing.
