Most people who find bedbugs ask the same question within the first hour: can these make us ill? It is a fair worry, because other blood-feeding insects certainly can. Here is a plain account of what is understood, and where the real harm lies.
What Is Known
Bedbugs have lived alongside people for a very long time and have been studied closely. Researchers have found various germs inside them, which is not surprising in an insect that feeds on blood. What has not been shown is bedbugs passing those germs on to people in everyday life. They are not treated as carriers of disease in the way mosquitoes or ticks are.
That is the honest position: not known to spread disease, rather than proven never to. If you read a frightening headline, it is usually describing what was found inside the insect in a laboratory, not illness caught from a bite.
What Bedbugs Actually Do to People
- Bites. Many people get itchy red marks, often in lines or small groups. Others in the same bed get nothing visible at all.
- Scratched skin. Scratching can break the skin, and broken skin can become infected. That is a reason to leave bites alone, not a sign of disease from the bug.
- Lost sleep. Waking to itch, or lying awake waiting to be bitten, adds up over a few weeks, especially for children and shift workers.
- Worry. Many people feel anxious or embarrassed, check the bed repeatedly or dread going to sleep. That is a normal reaction and it usually eases once treatment is under way.
- Allergic reactions. Rarely, someone reacts badly. Swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing needs 999.

When to Speak to a Pharmacist or GP
For itching and ordinary skin reactions, a pharmacist is a good first stop and can suggest something to calm it. See a GP if a bite looks infected, with spreading redness, heat or pus, if the rash is widespread, or if someone in the house is very young, elderly or already unwell and you are worried. How long marks usually take to settle is covered in how long bedbug bites last.
If lost sleep or anxiety is getting on top of someone, that is worth mentioning to a GP too. It is a recognised effect of living with bedbugs, not an overreaction.
What This Means for the Household
Because bedbugs are not a disease risk in the usual sense, there is no need to keep children off school, isolate anyone or throw out clothes and bedding. What matters is stopping the bites and stopping the spread. For what to say to a school or employer, see telling work, school or friends.
It also means shop-bought sprays and bombs are not worth the risk. They add chemicals to a bedroom without dealing with the bugs, and they tend to push them into other rooms. Follow the instructions we give on the day of any treatment instead.
Dealing With the Cause
The effects stop when the bedbugs do. Treatment is either heat, usually one visit, or chemical, usually two or three visits; both start from £220. The borough page explains how to keep them to one room while you wait, and if you are not yet sure what is biting you, an inspection from £120 will tell you.
Related Questions
Can you catch anything from a bedbug bite?
Bedbugs are not known to pass diseases to people. The main risks are itchy bites, infection from scratching, and lost sleep.
Do we need to keep the children off school?
No. Bedbugs are not an infectious illness. Send them in clean clothes from a bag that has not been near the affected bed.
Should we see a doctor about the bites?
A pharmacist can help with itching. See a GP if a bite looks infected or you are worried, and call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Is it normal to feel anxious about it?
Yes. Many people sleep badly and feel on edge while bedbugs are around. It usually eases once treatment starts, and a GP can help if it does not.
