Check Before You Start Packing
Before boxes come out, go over the beds and sofas properly: mattress seams, the corners of divan bases, headboards, the joints of bed frames and the cushions and underside of any sofa someone sleeps on. Packing moves everything, and if bedbugs are there it shakes them into boxes and bags.
If you find nothing and nobody has had unexplained bites, you can pack as normal. If you find signs, or you are not sure, stop and get it confirmed. An inspection starts from £120.

Tell Your Landlord in Writing
If your move is being arranged by the council or a housing association, tell your housing officer in writing as soon as you know. They may be able to adjust the timing, and your new flat is a fresh start that nobody wants to see affected. Who arranges and pays for treatment depends on your tenancy; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers.
Treat Before the Move, Not After
Treating the old flat first is almost always easier. Heat kills every life stage, eggs included, usually in one visit, which suits a move date that is close. Chemical treatment needs two, sometimes three visits about 10–14 days apart, so it needs more time before the move. The borough's chemical page explains how that course works in an estate flat.
Do not throw out beds or sofas before we have looked. Carrying an infested mattress down a stairwell or along a walkway spreads bedbugs to the landings and to neighbours, and most furniture can be treated and taken with you.
Packing and Unpacking
- Wash, dry, then bag. Clothes and bedding go through a hot wash and dryer and straight into sealed bags, not open boxes.
- Things that cannot be washed. Our guide to wool, silk and delicate fabrics covers what to do with them.
- Keep beds and sofas until last. Load them after they have been checked or treated, and keep them wrapped.
- Unpack in the kitchen or hall. Open bags on a hard floor, not on the new bed.
- Check again after a few weeks. Look over the beds in the new flat so anything missed is caught early.
If the old flat is being emptied for demolition or refurbishment, do not leave infested furniture behind for others to deal with without telling anyone. Mention it to your housing officer so the empty flat can be handled properly.
When you ring about a flat in Roehampton, tell us your move date, which rooms show signs and whether the landlord knows. Treatments start from £220, heat costs more than chemical, and the price is given on the phone. The Wandsworth borough page has more on the different buildings across the borough.
Bedbug Control Roehampton — Questions
Can I just leave the bedbugs behind in the old flat?
Only if nothing carrying them comes with you, which is hard to be sure of. Beds, sofas, bags and clothes can all carry them, so check and treat before the move.
Should I buy a new bed for the new flat?
Not unless we advise it. A new bed will not help if bedbugs travel in your other belongings, and a treated bed can usually move with you.
What if I find bedbugs in the new flat after moving?
Tell your landlord in writing straight away, keep sleeping in your own bed and ring us. It is easier to deal with in a new flat before it spreads.
Do I have to tell the housing officer?
It helps everyone if you do, and in writing. Whether you are obliged to is a question about your tenancy, which we cannot advise on.
