Bedbug Control Wandsworth Town

Warm floors do not deal with bedbugs. Here is how underfloor heating fits into treatment.

Underfloor heating makes a flat feel warm all through, and people sometimes hope it will make life hard for bedbugs, or worry that it attracts them. Neither is quite right. It does, though, shape a couple of practical decisions when your home is treated.

Why a Warm Floor Does Not Kill Them

Heat treatment works because the whole room, and everything in it, is raised to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive and held there while we watch for cold spots on a thermal camera. A heated floor is designed to keep a room comfortable for people. It warms the air gently from below; it does not come close to what is needed inside a mattress seam or a headboard joint.

Turning the heating right up will not change that, and it may damage the floor or anything sensitive standing on it. The same goes for fans, air conditioning and dehumidifiers; our guide to whether they affect bedbugs explains why.

Does a Warm Flat Make Things Worse?

Bedbugs are drawn to people, not to warm floors. They live where someone sleeps or sits for long periods: the bed, a sofa, the chair beside the bed. A flat that stays warm through the winter can let them keep breeding steadily, but the same is true of any well-heated home. The useful point is that they are not living in the floor itself; they are in the furniture above it.

Heat Treatment in a Room With Underfloor Heating

Tell us about the heating when you ring, along with the floor finish. Some floor coverings do not like high heat, and vinyl is on the list of things that can be damaged. Ask when you ring how that affects your room, and whether the underfloor heating should be off on the day. We give you the full list of what comes out before a heat visit; the London guide on preparing for heat treatment covers the general points.

On the thermal camera a heated floor can look different from an unheated one, so it helps us to know it is there. What matters for the treatment is the furniture and the room's edges, not the floor surface. Heat usually takes one visit and most of a day, and the room is used again once it has cooled.

Chemical Treatment and Your Floor

Chemical treatment puts a residual insecticide into seams, frames and along the skirtings, not across the open floor. Clear the floor so skirtings can be reached, leave the furniture in place, and follow the instructions we give on the day about cleaning; mopping the edges straight away can remove the residue that keeps working between visits. A course is usually two, sometimes three visits; the London guide on how many treatments it takes explains why.

Treatments start from £220, and heat costs more than chemical. When you ring about a Wandsworth Town flat, mention the floor type, the number of rooms and which ones are affected. The borough page covers the other kinds of building across the area.

If you are not sure whether the marks you are seeing are bedbugs at all, an inspection, from £120, confirms it before any treatment is booked.

Questions

Bedbug Control Wandsworth Town — Questions

Should I turn the underfloor heating up to kill them?

No. It will not get anywhere near the temperature needed inside a bed or sofa, and running it very hot may damage the floor.

Do bedbugs live under the floor?

They hide close to where people sleep and sit. Gaps at the skirting can be used, but the bed and nearby furniture are where they are usually found.

Should the heating be off on treatment day?

Ask when you ring. It depends on the treatment and the room, and we will tell you what to do before the visit.

Can I mop the floor after chemical treatment?

The open floor, yes, once it is dry. Avoid washing the skirtings and edges until we tell you, because the residue there is part of the treatment.
