Check Before It Comes Through the Door
Bedbugs travel in furniture, not on it. They sit in joints, screw holes, seams and under fabric, and they can go months without feeding. A bed frame that has sat in a Hendon storage unit over the summer can still carry them. The time to look is before it is in your room, not after.
- Take a torch. Phone light is fine. Look into every joint of a bed frame, the corners of drawers and the underside of any upholstered seat.
- Look for spots, not insects. Small dark marks like dots from a felt pen, pale shed skins and tiny cream eggs are easier to find than the bugs themselves.
- Turn the mattress over. Check the seams, the piping and the label. Brown staining along the edge is worth asking about.
- If in doubt, leave it. A low-priced chair is not a bargain if it brings an infestation with it.

If You Find Them After Moving In
Tell whoever you rent from, in writing, as soon as you find them. In a shared house or a room let near the university in Hendon, that is the landlord or letting agent; in halls, it is the accommodation office. Who arranges and pays depends on your agreement and on where the bedbugs came from, which is not always easy to prove. We can describe what we find; we are not legal advisers.
Do not carry the furniture back out through the house, and do not move onto a housemate’s sofa. Both spread them to rooms that were clean. Keep sleeping in your own bed, bag your bedding and wash it hot, and keep clothes in sealed bags off the floor.
How a Single Room Is Usually Treated
One bedroom with a few pieces of furniture suits chemical treatment well: a first visit, a follow-up to catch what hatches, and a room you can use again once it is dry. Heat does the room in one day and kills the eggs too, but it costs more and everything heat-sensitive has to come out first. If the whole house is involved, a landlord may prefer to have every room done together; the page for landlords letting by the room in Barnet covers that side.
Keeping It From Coming Home With You
If your room is being treated, your bags and laundry can carry them to a family home at the weekend. Wash and dry what you take, keep it sealed, and leave furniture where it is until the course is finished.
Bedbug Control Hendon — Questions
Can I just throw the secondhand bed frame out?
Ask us first. Carrying it through the house and out to the bins can drop bedbugs along the way. If it needs to go, it should be wrapped and usually treated before it leaves.
My housemates have not been bitten. Does that mean it is only my room?
Not necessarily. Some people do not react to bites at all. An inspection, from £120, shows which rooms are affected.
Will a treatment in my Hendon room disrupt my lectures?
Chemical visits take an hour or two and you can go back in once it is dry. Heat takes most of a day, so pick a day you can be out.
The bites are really itchy. What should I do?
A pharmacist or GP can help with the skin reaction. Call 999 if anyone shows signs of a severe allergic reaction.
How much does it cost to treat one student room?
Treatments start at £220. You get the figure on the phone before anything is booked, based on the rooms and the method.
