How Bedbugs Move Through a Single Level
A short hallway is not much of a barrier. Bedbugs that start in a bedroom can reach the living room along the skirting or in a cardigan dropped on an armchair. In a one-level home the armchair or the sofa is often where someone naps in the afternoon, and that gives them a second place to feed.

Preparation Is Easier on One Floor
Nothing has to be carried up or down stairs, which matters if the person living there is older or unsteady on their feet. The list is the same as anywhere: strip and hot-wash the bedding, clear the floors, and bag clothes from chairs and baskets. What helps in a one-level home is doing it room by room, in a line, so that nothing from an affected room is put down in one that might be clear.

Choosing the Treatment
With the bedroom and the living room both involved, heat treatment can do the whole home on one level in a day and kills the eggs as well. It means being out of the house for most of that day, with pets, and it costs more. Medication, aerosols and anything heat-sensitive come out first.
Chemical treatment means two or three short visits, and people can go back into the room once it has dried. For someone who finds a long day out difficult, that is often the better fit. Ground-floor flats with neighbours above may also benefit from a residual along the walls you share.
