Why a Pull-Out Bed Is Easy to Miss
When the trundle is pushed in, nobody sees it. It is dark, rarely disturbed and a few centimetres below someone asleep. If bedbugs get into the main bed, the frame and mattress underneath are just the sort of shelter they look for.
It works the other way too. A guest sleeps on the trundle, goes home, and it is pushed back in with whatever came with them. Weeks later the person in the main bed is the one being bitten.
Checking One Properly
Pull the trundle all the way out, and if it lifts off its runners, take it out of the frame altogether. Then work with a torch:
- The thin mattress, all the way round the seams and under any label
- The trundle frame, especially the corners, wheel mountings and any fabric panel
- The inside of the main bed frame, above where the trundle sits
- The floor or carpet that was underneath
- Any bedding folded and stored on top of the trundle mattress

Spotting on the main bed's slats, seen from underneath, is a sign that both parts are involved. If you find nothing at all but the bites carry on, leave the trundle out rather than pushing it back, and book an inspection from £120 so the frame can be looked at by someone who knows where to find them.
Treating a Two-Level Bed
Both parts get treated, whichever one showed the signs. They are too close together to separate. For chemical treatment, the trundle is left pulled out so the frame, runners and main bed underside can all be reached, and the residue stays in the joints to catch those that hatch before the follow-up visit.
Heat treatment takes the whole room to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive, including the space under the main bed, so the trundle is dealt with in the same visit. It costs more than chemical, and both start from £220. The figure for a room in Collier Row depends on how many rooms are involved.
If the trundle is in a child's room, getting a child’s bedroom ready for treatment goes through the toys, school things and bedding.
Afterwards
For the first few weeks after treatment, keep the trundle pulled out when you check the room so you can see the whole frame. Stop using the trundle as storage. Folded duvets and spare pillows kept inside it make it harder to check and give bedbugs somewhere to hide. When a guest has used it, strip it, hot-wash the bedding and look at the seams before it goes back in. For guest visits and family routines more generally, see the Havering page.
Bedbug Control Collier Row — Questions
Can I just throw the trundle mattress away?
Only if we advise it. Carrying it through the house spreads them, and the frame would still need treating.
Only the guest was bitten. Is the main bed affected?
Possibly. The two share a frame, so we treat both. Some people do not react to bites, so the main bed could be affected without anyone noticing.
Should I leave the trundle pulled out until someone comes?
Yes, if it is already out. Do not push it in and out, and do not move it to another room.
Are sofa beds the same problem?
Similar. Anything with a folding or hidden sleeping part needs to be opened fully to check and to treat.
Can a trundle on a carpet spread them into the floor?
The carpet edge and gripper nearest the bed can hold them, which is why we look at the floor underneath and treat it where there are signs.
