Why a Downstairs Bed Needs Its Own Plan
A bed in a living room is not like a bed in a bedroom. The person using it often sits in the armchair beside it for hours, has a table of medication and a phone charger within reach, and may have visitors or carers in and out through the day. Bedbugs follow the person, so the chair, the sofa and the bedside table matter as much as the mattress.
It also means the usual advice about sleeping in your own bed is not a choice here, because there is nowhere else they can sleep. That is fine. Staying put keeps the bedbugs in one place, and the job is to treat that place well.
What to Check Around the Bed
- The mattress seams and any waterproof cover, including under its elastic
- The frame, the side rails and any joints on a bed brought down from upstairs
- The armchair the person uses most, especially the seams and under the cushion
- The bedside table or trolley, and anything kept in a bag beside the bed
- Skirting and carpet edges nearest the head of the bed

If the bed was carried down from a bedroom, look at that bedroom too. The bedbugs may have been living there first.
Choosing a Treatment Around Them
Chemical treatment in Havering takes one to two hours a visit, with two or sometimes three visits about 10-14 days apart. The person needs to be out of the room while we work and until the treated surfaces are dry, which is often easier to arrange for a couple of hours than for a whole day.
Heat treatment usually finishes in one visit but takes most of a day, and medication, aerosols and some electronics have to come out of the room first. If the bed is powered or has an air mattress or a pump, tell us when you ring and we will talk through what that means before anything is booked. Heat costs more than chemical. Both start from £220.
Whichever it is, think about where the person will be on the day and who will be with them. A kitchen, a neighbour or a relative's house for a few hours are all common answers.
Keeping the Rest of the House Clear
Carers and family carry bags and coats in and out of that room. Keep them on a hard chair or a hook in the hall rather than on the bed or the sofa. Bedding from the downstairs bed goes straight into a hot wash in a tied bag, not into a laundry basket upstairs.
The guide to food and medicines during treatment covers what to do with a tray of tablets and dressings on the day. In a Hornchurch house the front room is usually beside the kitchen, so that guide is worth reading before you book.
Bedbug Control Hornchurch — Questions
Can the person stay in the room during treatment?
No. They need to be out while we work, and for chemical treatment until surfaces are dry. Follow the instructions we give on the day for when they can go back in.
Should we move the bed back upstairs to get it away from the living room?
Not until it is treated. Carrying an affected bed through the house is one of the easiest ways to spread them.
They are bitten but do not seem bothered. Should we still act?
Yes. Some people barely react, and the bedbugs will keep feeding and breeding either way. For skin reactions a pharmacist or GP can help, and call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Do we need to throw the mattress away?
Usually not. Only get rid of it if we advise it, and never before treatment, because moving it out spreads them.
Can you treat the armchair as well?
Yes. Upholstered chairs next to an affected bed are part of the job and are included in what we look at when we quote.
