Why Bedbugs Get Missed
A quick look at the top of a mattress in the daytime finds very little. Bedbugs spend the day tucked into the tightest gap near the bed, which is often not the mattress at all. Early on there are only a few of them, and a small number of dark spots on a patterned sheet or a dark frame is easy to overlook.
Bites are not proof either way. Some people react strongly, some hardly at all, and a partner who shows nothing is not evidence that the bed is clear. Our guide on telling bedbugs from something else covers the look-alikes.
Building Your Own Evidence
If you want a second look to count, bring something to show. Over a week or two:
- Note each morning where the new bites are and which bed or chair you used
- Photograph the bites in daylight the day they appear
- Check the seams, frame joints and headboard with a torch and photograph any spotting
- If you catch an insect, put it in a sealed bag or a clean jar with a lid
- Look at the sofa too, if you fall asleep there

The places a first look tends to skip are covered in where bedbugs hide that gets missed: behind a fixed headboard, inside a divan base, along the carpet gripper and in the joints of a bedside table.
When to Get an Inspection
If you have done all that and still cannot settle it, an inspection is the next step. It starts at £120 and its only job is to say yes or no before anyone pays for treatment. If the answer is no, you have saved the cost of treating something that was not there, and you can take that back to a pharmacist or GP.
If you rent your home in Harold Hill and the person who said no was the landlord or housing provider, put what you have found in writing to them. Who arranges and pays for treatment depends on the tenancy, and we cannot advise on the legal side.
If It Turns Out to Be Bedbugs
Then the weeks already passed matter less than what happens next. For an estate flat, the chemical treatment page for Havering explains the course of visits and working with a landlord. Treatments start from £220.
Keep your notes and photos after treatment too. They give you something to compare against over the following weeks, so a new bite can be judged against the old pattern rather than guessed at.
Bedbug Control Harold Hill — Questions
My doctor said it was a rash. Should I ignore that?
No. Keep following their advice for your skin. If the bites keep coming, an inspection can check the bed, and you can take the answer back to them.
Nobody else in the house is bitten. Can it still be bedbugs?
Yes. People react very differently, and some show no marks at all. The evidence is in the bed and furniture, not on the other people.
Does an inspection mean I have to book treatment with you?
No. It tells you whether bedbugs are there. What you do with the answer is up to you, or your landlord if you rent.
Should I spray the bed while I wait?
Please do not. Shop sprays tend to push them deeper into the room and make them harder to find on an inspection.
What if I am having a bad reaction to the bites?
Speak to a pharmacist or GP. If anyone shows signs of a severe allergic reaction, call 999.
What does an inspection cost?
Inspections start from £120, and you are told the figure on the phone before we book.
