Catch One if You Can
A live or dead insect in a sealed bag ends most arguments. Press a strip of clear tape over it, or tip it into a small jar or a freezer bag and seal it. Do not squash it into a tissue, which leaves nothing anyone can identify. Write the date and the room on the bag.
If you cannot catch one, photograph it next to a coin, as close as your phone will focus. A clear picture showing the flat, oval body and the colour is often enough for us to tell you what it is.

Show Them the Signs, Not Just the Bites
Bites are the weakest evidence, because people react so differently. One person can come up in lines of itchy welts while the person in the next room shows nothing at all, even if they are being fed on too. That is often why flatmates doubt it.
What is harder to argue with is what bedbugs leave behind. Take everyone into the room with a torch and look together:
- Clusters of small black dots on the mattress piping, like ink from a fine pen
- Pale, empty skins in the corners of the bed base or along the slats
- Tiny rust-coloured stains on the sheet where one was crushed
- The same black dots on screw heads, frame joints or the skirting behind the bed
A UV torch sounds like a shortcut but is not much use here; our guide on whether UV torches show bedbugs explains what works better.
Get an Answer Nobody Has to Take on Trust
When a flat cannot agree, an inspection is the neutral answer. It starts at £120, covers the bedrooms and shared spaces, and tells you whether it is bedbugs, which rooms are affected and how far it has gone. It also means nobody pays for treatment that turns out not to be needed.
If it is confirmed, the treatment plan is for the flat, not one person’s room. Everyone needs to prepare their own space, keep sleeping in their own bed, and not take bags of clothes to a partner or a friend. The chemical and heat pages for the borough explain how each would work in a flat.
Telling the Landlord
One of you should report it in writing to the landlord or letting agent, with the date and the rooms. It is simpler if it comes from the whole flat. Who arranges and pays depends on the tenancy and the cause, and we are not legal advisers. The Merton page covers the first week for a household meeting this for the first time.
When you ring about a flat in Colliers Wood, tell us how many bedrooms there are, who has seen or felt what, and whether you have a sample. That is usually enough to decide whether an inspection comes first.
Bedbug Control Colliers Wood — Questions
Why am I the only one getting bitten?
Some people do not react to bites at all, so others in the flat may be fed on without knowing. It does not mean the bugs are only in your room.
Can I send you a photo to check?
Yes. Ring us first and we will tell you how to send it. A clear, close picture next to a coin helps most.
My flatmates will not pay for an inspection. What can I do?
You can book one for your own room; inspections start at £120. If it finds bedbugs, that usually changes the conversation.
Should I move out of my room until they agree?
No. Moving to the sofa or a friend’s place tends to spread them. Keep sleeping in your bed in Colliers Wood until it is treated.
What if it turns out not to be bedbugs?
Then you know, and nobody has paid for treatment. The London guide on bedbugs or something else covers the usual lookalikes.
