Search online for how to check a bed and you will find plenty of people recommending an ultraviolet torch. The idea is appealing: switch off the light, sweep the purple beam over the mattress, and anything nasty lights up. The reality in a real bedroom is rather less tidy.
What a UV Torch Actually Shows
Ultraviolet light makes certain materials fluoresce. Some washing powders, optical brighteners in fabric, lint, body fluids and plenty of household stains glow under it. That is why it is useful for checking whether a hotel bathroom has been cleaned properly, and why it produces so many false alarms on a mattress.
Live bedbugs are a dull reddish brown and do not glow in any useful way. You may read that their shed skins show up under UV. Sometimes pale skins are easier to pick out against a dark fabric, but that has more to do with contrast than with fluorescence, and a bright white light shows them just as well.
What It Misses
The most reliable sign of bedbugs is the small dark spotting they leave: digested blood, dried into dots along seams and on bare wood. Under ultraviolet those dots look dark, exactly as they do under an ordinary bulb, but the glowing background around them makes them harder to see, not easier.
The other problem is angle. Bedbugs sit inside things: folded piping on a mattress, the joint where a slat meets the side rail, the gap behind a headboard. A torch beam, of any colour, only shows the surface. What finds them is getting into the fold.

The Torch and Card That Work Better
The kit we would suggest costs almost nothing. You need a bright white torch, ideally one with a narrow beam, and a thin rigid card: an old loyalty card, a hotel key card or a spare bank card you have cut up.
- Strip the bed and put the bedding straight into a bag for the wash.
- Hold the torch low and close, so the light skims across the fabric rather than shining straight down on it.
- Run the edge of the card slowly along every seam and fold of the mattress, opening the piping as you go.
- Do the same along the corners of the base, the slat joints and the back of the headboard.
- Look for dark dots, pale eggs about the size of a pinhead, pale shed skins and the insects themselves.
- Wipe the card on a white tissue. A smear of rusty red is worth photographing.
Low, raking light throws a small shadow off anything raised, which is why a bug or an egg stands out when the torch is held almost flat. Our London guide on where bedbugs hide that gets missed lists the less obvious places to run the card along.
When a UV Torch Is Still Worth Having
It is not useless. If you travel a lot, a quick sweep over a hotel room will tell you something about how well it was cleaned, which is a fair reason to look harder at the bed. It can also help you spot where a stain has spread on a light-coloured mattress so you can check that area with the white torch.
What it should not do is reassure you. A mattress that shows nothing under UV has not been cleared of bedbugs. For more on checking a room away from home, see where hotels should check.
If You Find Something, or Still Are Not Sure
If the card turns up bugs, eggs or spotting, stop there, remake the bed with clean sheets and keep sleeping in it. Ring us on 0800 955 1018 and we will talk through heat and chemical treatment. If you found marks you cannot identify, an inspection in Merton from £120 settles it before any money goes on treatment. The borough page covers the first week in full.
Related Questions
Do bedbugs glow under ultraviolet light?
Not in any way that helps you find them. The insects are dull brown, and their spotting looks dark under any light.
Is a UV torch a waste of money, then?
For checking a bed, mostly yes. A bright white torch held low, and a thin card run along the seams, will show far more.
I checked with a UV torch and saw nothing. Am I clear?
Not necessarily. Bedbugs hide inside folds and joints that a torch beam does not reach. Check again with a white light and a card, or book an inspection.
What does bedbug spotting look like?
Small dark dots, like the tip of a felt pen pressed on the fabric, often in lines or clusters along seams and on bare wood near where you sleep.
