First, Stop and Look
Before you clean anything, find out where they are. Cleaning first wipes away the spotting that shows us which rooms are affected, and that evidence is what decides how much needs treating. Keep the insect you found in a sealed bag if you can.
Check the bed where it was found: mattress seams, the frame joints, the headboard fixings and the skirting behind. Then check any other bed in the house. If you are not sure what you are looking at, an inspection starts at £120.

Cleaning That Helps
- Hot washing and drying. Bedding, pyjamas and clothes from the affected room, bagged in the room first, then through a hot wash and a hot tumble-dry.
- Careful vacuuming. Along mattress seams, the bed base and the skirting, with the bag sealed or the canister emptied into a tied bag and taken straight outside.
- Clearing clutter from the floor. Wash what can be washed and bag it; it will have to come up before treatment anyway.
- Keeping clean things sealed. Once washed, bags stay tied until the room has been treated.
Cleaning That Spreads Them
- Carrying loose bedding through the house to the machine, shedding bugs on the stairs
- Emptying wardrobes onto another bed to sort through them
- Stripping the room and moving furniture into the hall or another bedroom
- Spraying bleach or household sprays into seams, which does little and makes them move
- Shop foggers, which push bedbugs into walls and neighbouring rooms and leave the eggs
- Dumping the mattress before anyone has seen it
The common thread is movement. Anything that shifts bedbugs from the room they are in to a room they are not is doing their travelling for them. Our guide on the stages from first bite to all clear shows where cleaning fits.
Cleaning Around the Treatment
Before chemical treatment, the room needs clearing and the bedding washed; that is most of the useful cleaning done. Afterwards, do not vacuum or mop along the treated skirtings and edges until we say so, because the residual there is what keeps working between visits. Vacuuming the middle of the floor is fine.
Before heat treatment, less needs clearing, and heavy cleaning beforehand is unnecessary. The heat-sensitive list we send you matters more than a spotless room.
When you ring about a home in South Wimbledon, tell us what has already been washed or moved, and where it went. It helps us check the right rooms. The Merton page has more on the first week and deciding calmly.
Bedbug Control South Wimbledon — Questions
Does a dirty house cause bedbugs?
No. They arrive on belongings, furniture and people, and live on blood, not dirt. Clean homes get them too.
Can a steam cleaner kill them?
Steam can kill bedbugs it reaches directly, but it misses those deep in joints and gaps, and it does not replace treatment. Use it carefully if at all.
Should I wash every item of clothing in the house?
No. Focus on the affected room. Washing a clean room’s wardrobe means carrying it around the house for no gain.
How soon after treatment can I clean normally?
After heat, as soon as the room has cooled. After chemical, we tell you which edges to leave; follow the instructions given on the day.
How much is treatment once I have found one in South Wimbledon?
Treatments start at £220, depending on the number of rooms and on heat or chemical. You get the figure on the phone before anything is booked.
