Bedbug Control Wimbledon

A soft, layered bedroom gives them more to hide in. Here is how to sort it.

Scatter cushions, a folded throw at the foot of the bed, a rug either side: a comfortable bedroom is also a room with a lot of fabric in it. None of that has to be thrown away, but each piece needs a decision before we treat.

Why All That Fabric Matters

Bedbugs do not eat fabric and are not drawn to it for its own sake. They want somewhere dark and tight close to where a person lies still. Cushion piping, the fringe of a throw, the underside of a rug and the folds of a valance all give them that, right next to the bed.

The practical problem is volume. A plain bedroom has a mattress, a frame and some skirting. A layered one has perhaps a dozen extra items, every one of which might hold a few bugs or eggs, and every one of which someone will want to carry out of the room to clean.

Sorting It Into Three Piles

Do the sorting inside the room, with bags ready, so nothing crosses the landing loose.

  • Washable: pillowcases, throws, cotton cushion covers, the valance. Bag them in the room, then hot-wash and tumble-dry on the hottest setting the labels allow.
  • Dry-clean or delicate: wool throws, silk or velvet cushions. Seal them in a bag and tell the dry cleaner why, or hold them back for us to deal with in the room.
  • Too big or awkward to move: large rugs, floor cushions, upholstered headboards. Leave these where they are and mention them when you ring.

Once washed and dried, keep the clean items bagged and out of the bedroom until treatment is finished. Putting them straight back on the bed undoes the work.

What Each Treatment Needs From the Room

For chemical treatment, soft furnishings are the part to clear. The residual goes along seams, frames and skirtings, and it cannot reach into the middle of a folded blanket, so washable things come out and get washed. Rugs are usually lifted so the floor edge beneath can be treated, then checked before they go back down.

For heat treatment, far more can stay in the room, because the heat works through cushions, rugs and piles of fabric as the room comes up. That is the main reason people with a heavily furnished bedroom lean towards heat, even though it costs more. Candles and aerosols, often kept on a dressing table, are on the list of things that come out first.

The Rug Question

Rugs are the item people most want to get rid of, and the one where haste does most harm. Rolling up a rug and carrying it down the stairs drags whatever is underneath through the house. Leave it flat. We look at the underside and the edges, and at the carpet or boards below. Many rugs can be treated in place; a thin cotton one might simply go through the wash.

If you are unsure whether the marks on a pale rug or cushion are bedbug spotting at all, an inspection starts at £120 and settles it before anything is washed or moved. The Merton page covers the first week more broadly, and what not to throw out in a hurry.

When you ring about a bedroom in Wimbledon, a quick count helps: how many cushions, throws and rugs, and which of them can go in a machine. That tells us how long preparation will take and which route suits the room.

Questions

Bedbug Control Wimbledon — Questions

Do I need to throw away my decorative cushions?

Usually not. Covers can be washed, and the inner cushions can be heat treated in the room or bagged until we have seen them.

Can bedbugs live in a wool rug?

They can shelter along the underside and the edges of any rug, wool or not, if it sits close to the bed. Leave it flat until it has been looked at.

Will the washing machine be enough on its own?

A hot wash followed by a hot tumble-dry deals with what is in the load. It does nothing for the bed, the frame or the room, which still need treating.

Is heat or chemical better for a bedroom in Wimbledon with lots of fabric?

Heat usually suits a room like that because less has to be emptied. It costs more than chemical. Treatments start at £220, and you get the figure on the phone before booking.
