Find Out Before Anything Leaves
If there has been any suspicion of bedbugs, settle it before the first car is loaded. An inspection starts at £120 and tells you which rooms, if any, are affected. That one answer decides what can be moved freely and what needs treating first, and it takes one argument off the table.
If the answer is no, you can divide things as planned. If it is yes, the order of events matters more than who gets which chair.

Which Items Carry the Risk
Not everything in the house is equal. The pieces most likely to carry bedbugs are the ones that sat in or near an affected bedroom:
- Beds, bed frames and headboards, especially with joints or slats
- Bedside tables and chests of drawers from the same room
- Upholstered chairs and sofas where anyone regularly slept or dozed
- Boxes, bags and suitcases stored under the bed or in the wardrobe
- Books, frames and small items kept by the bed
Clothes are easier than furniture, because a hot wash and a hot tumble-dry deal with them. Hard items such as lamps, frames and small electricals can be wiped over and checked with a torch along every seam and screw hole before they are packed. It is the large, jointed pieces from the bedroom that are hardest to check by eye, so those are the ones to hold back until the room has been treated.
Kitchen things, garden furniture and items from rooms nobody sleeps in are much lower risk. If the loft holds stored bags from an affected room, see whether bedbugs can live in the loft.
Treat, Then Divide
The simplest route is to treat the house first and split the contents afterwards. Heat treatment is usually one visit and treats furniture where it stands, which suits a household that wants to move on quickly; it costs more than chemical. Chemical treatment takes two, sometimes three visits about 10–14 days apart, so the furniture has to stay put for several weeks.
If one person has to leave before treatment can finish, they should take as little as possible from the affected rooms: clothes hot-washed, dried and sealed in new bags, and furniture from those rooms left behind until it has been treated. Arranging and paying for treatment between two people is something you will need to agree; we can only tell you what the job involves.
Children Moving Between Two Homes
Where children will spend time in both homes, their bags go back and forth every week. Until treatment is finished, keep a set of clothes and a comfort toy at each address rather than packing a bag each time, and wash whatever does travel on arrival. Check their beds in both homes for the first month.
For the first week and the decisions that come with it, the Merton page is a calmer place to start. When you ring about a home in Raynes Park, tell us the moving dates and roughly what is going where, and we will plan around them.
Bedbug Control Raynes Park — Questions
Can we just split the furniture and each deal with our own?
You can, but then two homes need treating instead of one, and it usually costs more overall. Treating first is simpler.
Who pays for treatment when we are separating?
That is between the two of you. Treatments start at £220, depending on the rooms and on heat or chemical, and we give you the figure before booking.
Should we get rid of the bed rather than argue over it?
Not before it has been looked at. Carrying an untreated bed through the house spreads bedbugs, and most beds can be treated.
Can furniture go into storage until we decide?
Not untreated. Bedbugs can survive a long time in stored furniture and come out when it is unpacked, perhaps months later in Raynes Park or somewhere new.
