Thermal Pest Control — bedbug control in Waltham Forest, chemical and heat treatments

Bedbug Control Walthamstow Village

A straight account of what goes into your home with each method.

Many people are uneasy about any insecticide going into the room where they or their children sleep. That is a reasonable thing to ask about. Here is what each treatment actually involves, so you can choose with the facts in front of you.

What Chemical Treatment Puts in the Room

With chemical treatment, a residual insecticide is applied to the places bedbugs hide: mattress seams, bed frames and headboards, skirtings and the joints of furniture near the bed. It is targeted rather than sprayed over every surface, and it is meant to leave a residue, because that residue is what catches the bedbugs that hatch after the visit.

You are out of the room while it is applied and until the treated surfaces are dry, which is a few hours. Each visit takes one to two hours. Because the residue does not reliably kill eggs, there are usually two, sometimes three, visits about 10 to 14 days apart. On the day you will be told what to do and when to go back in, and it is those instructions you should follow.

What Heat Treatment Involves

With heat treatment, the room is brought up to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive and held there, with a thermal camera used to find and deal with cold spots. It kills eggs too, so it is usually a single visit, lasting most of a day. Once the room has cooled, you can use it again, and the heat itself leaves nothing behind.

Heat has its own demands. Aerosols, candles, medication, vinyl, plants and some electronics have to come out of the room first, and pets need to be out of the home for the day. In a flat or a house that shares walls with neighbours, a light residual insecticide may be put along the edges of the room as well, because heat alone does nothing to stop bedbugs coming back through from next door. If that matters to you, ask about it before booking.

Choosing Between Them

If avoiding insecticide is the priority and your home is a house with no shared walls, heat is usually the closer fit, though it costs more. If you are in a converted flat, expect us to talk about the edges. Chemical treatment suits a single contained room and costs less, but asks more of you over the fortnight between visits: stripping and hot-washing bedding and clearing floors each time.

Both start from £220, with the exact figure given on the phone by room count. If you are not yet certain it is bedbugs, an inspection from £120 means nothing is applied until it is confirmed.

What to Tell Us When You Ring

The more we know, the better we can say what we would advise for your home in Walthamstow Village. Mention it if anyone in the household is pregnant, has a baby, has asthma or another breathing condition, or if you keep pets, fish or reptiles. For questions about your own health, your GP or pharmacist is the right person; we can tell you what goes into the room and how long to stay out, not whether it suits a particular medical condition.

What we would steer you away from is a shop-bought spray or fogger used while you decide. It still puts insecticide in the room, rarely reaches the seams where they hide, and can scatter them further. For more on the rest of the borough, see the Waltham Forest page.

Questions

Bedbug Control Walthamstow Village — Questions

Is the insecticide sprayed on my bedding?

No. You strip and hot-wash your bedding beforehand. The product goes into seams, joints, frames and skirtings rather than onto sheets and pillows.

How long does the residue last?

It is meant to stay active between visits, which is how it catches newly hatched bedbugs. We will tell you on the day how to clean around treated areas.

Does heat treatment use any insecticide at all?

The heat itself does not. In homes with shared walls a light residual may be applied at the edges of the room; ask when you ring if you would rather discuss that.

Can I stay in another room of my Walthamstow Village house during treatment?

Usually, yes, as long as you keep out of the treated room until you are told you can go back in.

I am pregnant. Which treatment should I choose?

Tell us when you ring so we can explain what each involves, and check with your GP or midwife about anything specific to you.
