Bedbug Control Cann Hall

They have gone. The bedbugs almost certainly have not.

When one person in a shared house is being bitten badly, moving out can feel like the answer to them. For everyone left behind it usually makes things worse, and for the person who left it often just moves the problem to a new address.

What Happens When the Person They Were Feeding On Leaves

Bedbugs stay close to a sleeping person because that is where they feed. When that person goes, the bugs in their room do not die off quickly; they can wait a long time for a meal, and in the meantime some start moving towards whoever is next nearest. In a shared house that is the room across the landing or the person who falls asleep on the sofa.

So if you have not been bitten yet, do not assume you are clear. Some people do not react to bites at all, and our guide on whether you can feel a bedbug bite explains why many people find out late.

Their Room and What They Left

Keep the door shut and do not let anyone move into it or use it for storage. Do not carry their furniture or bags out through the house. If they want things back, those items should be bagged and tied inside the room, washed hot where possible, and only then handed over.

Do not let the room be re-let or cleared by the landlord before it has been treated. A new housemate moving into an untreated room is the fastest way to start the cycle again.

Telling the Landlord and the Housemate Who Left

If you rent, put it in writing to the landlord or agent now: that one housemate was being bitten, that they have moved out, and which rooms you think are affected. Who arranges and pays depends on the tenancy and the cause, and we are pest controllers, not legal advisers, but a dated message helps everyone.

It is also kind to tell the housemate who left, calmly, that they should check their new bed and the bags they took with them. Bedbugs travel well in luggage, and they may not want to hear it, but it is better they know now.

Getting the House Treated

  1. Everyone checks their own bed — mattress seams, frame joints and the skirting behind the headboard — so we know how many rooms are involved.
  2. Nobody else moves rooms or starts sleeping on the sofa to get away from it.
  3. Ring with the room count. We give the figure on the phone before anything is booked; treatments start from £220.
  4. Choose the method. Heat suits an empty room full of belongings left behind and gets it done in one visit; chemical costs less and suits rooms where everyone can keep to the preparation between visits.
  5. Keep checking afterwards, especially in the rooms nearest the one that was empty.

If you are not certain the other rooms are affected, an inspection from £120 tells you before anyone pays for treatment. Houses in Cann Hall with several tenants on one agreement often need everyone to agree a date; the Waltham Forest page covers getting a whole household to act together.

Questions

Bedbug Control Cann Hall — Questions

Should the rest of us move out too?

No. Staying in your own beds keeps the bedbugs where they are and lets treatment reach them. Moving out usually spreads them to new places.

Does the empty room need treating if nobody sleeps there?

Yes. It is likely to hold the most bedbugs in the house, and left alone it keeps feeding them into the other rooms.

Who pays when one housemate had the bites?

That depends on your tenancy and on how they got in. Raise it in writing with the landlord and take housing advice if there is a dispute.

Our Cann Hall landlord wants to wait until a new tenant moves in. Is that a problem?

Yes. The room should be treated before anyone moves in, or the new tenant is likely to be bitten and the other rooms stay at risk.
