Where Bedbugs Hide in Period Joinery
Old timber moves. Over two centuries, panels shrink away from their frames, skirtings pull from the wall, boards open up and the boxes that shutters fold back into collect dust and gaps. Bedbugs use all of it. In a bedroom like this they are still mostly near the bed, but the spread outwards tends to follow the joinery.
- Behind the shutter leaves and inside the shutter boxes
- The joints where panel meets frame, especially at the lower rails
- Along the skirting and the gaps between old floorboards
- Picture rails and the cornice nearest the bedhead
- Antique bed frames with carved joints and loose fixings

Tell Us About the House First
Before any treatment in a listed house, we want to know what is original and what is precious. Painted or waxed panelling, old veneers, gilded frames, historic wallpaper, antique furniture and anything already fragile should be mentioned on the phone and pointed out on the day. We will not lift boards, open panelling or drill anything.
Whether a treatment counts as works to a listed building is a question for the owner and the council, not for us. We are pest controllers, not conservation advisers. What we can tell you is exactly what each method involves, so you can decide. If you rent a flat in a listed house, the freeholder or landlord will want to know as well, so report it in writing.
What Heat Means for Old Fabric
Heat treatment raises the whole room to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive, holds it there and leaves no residue on the joinery. Its reach into the backs of shutter boxes and panel joints is its strength. The question with period rooms is what the heat does to materials that are already old: some finishes, adhesives, veneers and delicate antiques are better taken out or protected, and we will go through the room with you and say which before starting.
What Chemical Means for Old Fabric
Chemical treatment puts a residual insecticide into seams, frames and skirtings rather than warming the whole room. In a panelled room it is targeted at the joints and edges where the bugs are, and we will agree with you where it should and should not go on original surfaces. It usually takes two or sometimes three visits, 10–14 days apart, because eggs are not reliably killed. It costs less than heat; both start from £220, with the exact figure given on the phone.
An inspection from £120 is worth it here. Knowing exactly which rooms and which joinery are affected keeps the treatment as small as it can be. For how we approach homes across the rest of the borough, see the Islington page.
Bedbug Control Barnsbury — Questions
Will heat treatment crack my original shutters?
Tell us about them before the day. We look at the room with you and say what should be protected or taken out; we do not make blanket promises about old materials.
Do you need to remove panelling to treat behind it?
No. We treat the joints and edges as they are and do not open up or lift anything in the house.
Is chemical treatment better for a listed Barnsbury house?
Neither is automatically better. Heat leaves nothing on the surfaces; chemical is more targeted. We explain both and you choose.
Do I need consent before a treatment?
That is a question for the owner and the council. We can describe exactly what each method involves to help you ask it.
Can an antique bed be treated?
Usually, yes, where it stands. Mention it when you ring so we can look at the joints and finish first.
