What a Bag of Donations Can Carry
Bedbugs do not live on people. They hide in seams, folds and joints close to where someone sleeps, and they get moved when those things are packed up. A bag of bedding cleared out of a spare room, a folded duvet cover, a padded headboard or a bedside cabinet can all arrive with a few tucked inside.
Clothes that were stored in a wardrobe are a lower risk than anything that sat on or beside a bed. Our guide on whether you can get bedbugs from trying on clothes looks at second-hand clothing from the buyer's side.

A Sorting Routine That Keeps Them Contained
- Open bags on a hard, pale surface. A clear table under good light shows dark spotting and moving insects far better than a carpet or a crowded floor.
- Look before you shake. Run a torch along the seams of bedding, the piping of cushions and the corners of any wooden item before anything is unfolded.
- Keep a spare bin bag and ties at the table. If you see live insects, spotting or pale shed skins, retie the donation, put it inside a second bag and seal it.
- Tell whoever runs the shop. Let them decide what happens to the bag; do not carry it through the stockroom to a bin at the back.
- Keep your own coat and bag off the sorting area. Hang them away from the donations so nothing climbs in while you work.
Photograph anything you are unsure about. If a picture is not clear enough, a specimen sealed in a small pot or a clear bag is more useful to us than a description.
If You Think One Has Come Home With You
One insect on a sleeve is not an infestation. Put the clothes you wore into a hot wash and a hot tumble dry when you get in, and check your bed seams for the next few weeks. Bites on their own prove little, because people react so differently; a pharmacist or GP can help with itchy skin, and 999 is for anyone showing signs of a severe allergic reaction.
If you do find signs at home, an inspection in Lambeth starts from £120 and confirms what it is before you pay for a treatment.
When the Shop Itself Needs Treating
If signs keep turning up in the stockroom rather than in one bag, the problem is the room, not the donor. Racks, shelving joints, the soft furnishings on sale and any staff sofa are where we would look first. That is a job for the shop manager to arrange; our commercial treatment page covers workplaces and shops.
For a volunteer, the practical point is to report it rather than quietly binning the bag. A Brixton shop that knows early can deal with one corner of a stockroom instead of the whole building. The Lambeth borough page is written for renters who find bedbugs at home and are not sure what to do first.
Bedbug Control Brixton — Questions
Should donated clothes be washed before they go on sale?
That is for the shop to decide. From a bedbug point of view, a hot wash and a hot tumble dry kill every stage on washable items, which is why it is the first thing we suggest at home.
Can bedbugs live in donated books or toys?
Hard plastic toys are a poor hiding place. Books and cardboard boxes can shelter a few if they were kept beside a bed, so look along spines and box flaps.
Do I need to tell the person who donated the bag?
Usually the shop has no way of knowing who it was. Report it to the manager and let them decide what happens next.
What does it cost if my Brixton flat needs treating?
Treatment starts from £220. We give you the price over the phone once we know how many rooms are involved and whether heat or chemical suits them.
Is it bedbugs or something else in the bag?
Carpet beetle larvae and dust are common in stored textiles. Keep a sample or a clear photo and we can tell you.
