The Wall Gaps Worth Checking
Bedbugs want a tight, dark space near a sleeping person. In a room with tired plaster, the wall provides plenty. Look at these within a couple of metres of the bed:
- Cracks running out from the corners of doors and windows
- Blown or loose plaster that sounds hollow when tapped
- The joint between the wall and the ceiling, where paint has split
- Gaps around electrical sockets, switch plates and old cable runs
- Wallpaper lifting at a seam or along the top of the skirting
Dark spotting in or beside a crack is the clearest sign. You may also see pale skins caught in the edge of peeling paper.

Why Filling Them Now Makes Things Worse
The instinct is to reach for filler. Hold off until treatment is finished. Sealing a crack with bedbugs behind it does not kill them; it shuts them away from the treatment, and they come out later through the next gap along. Taping over sockets or stuffing tissue into holes does the same.
Once the course is over and the room is clear, filling and repainting is worth doing. Fewer cracks means fewer places for any new arrival to settle.
How Treatment Reaches Into the Wall
A chemical treatment puts a residual insecticide along the cracks, the ceiling line and the edges of sockets as well as the bed. Bedbugs sheltering inside the plaster cross it when they come out to feed. Because eggs are not reliably killed, a second visit about 10–14 days later is normal, sometimes a third.
With heat, the room is brought up to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive and kept there while the heat works into the plaster. Old solid walls are slow to warm, so the thermal camera is used along the cracks and corners to find the cold spots and hold the heat on them. Sockets are a question to raise with us before the day, along with the usual list of heat-sensitive belongings.
Before the Visit
Pull furniture a hand's width away from the cracked walls if it moves easily, but do not carry it out of the room. Take down pictures and mirrors near the bed and leave them in the room, face up. Strip the bedding and hot-wash it. If the house is divided into flats, tell us, because cracks in a party wall can connect to the flat next door.
If you are not sure the marks in the plaster are bedbugs at all, an inspection from £120 answers it. Renters in a Kennington house should tell the landlord in writing, including the state of the walls; who arranges and pays depends on the tenancy and the cause, and we are not legal advisers. The Lambeth page covers renting with bedbugs more broadly.
Bedbug Control Kennington — Questions
Can bedbugs live inside a wall?
They can shelter in cracks and gaps in the plaster, and behind loose wallpaper, as long as it is close to where someone sleeps.
Should I fill the cracks before you arrive?
No. Leave them open so the treatment can reach them, and fill them once the course is finished.
Will heat damage old plaster in a Kennington house?
The room is warmed gradually and held, not blasted. Tell us about anything fragile, such as ornate cornicing or lifting paper, and we will talk it through before the day.
Do cracks in the ceiling matter as much as the walls?
Cracks close to the bed matter most, wherever they are. A split along the ceiling line above the headboard is worth checking; one across the far side of the room much less so.
How much will it cost?
Treatments are from £220. The price depends on the rooms and the method, and heat costs more than chemical; we confirm it on the phone first.
