How They Reached the Next Room
The most common route is a person. Somebody bitten in room one started sleeping in room two, or a child climbed into a sibling's bed after a bad night. The bedbugs followed the host. Other routes are slower: bedding carried along the hall unbagged, a chair or a laundry basket moved between rooms, or the gap under a shared skirting or around a radiator pipe.
Working out which route it was matters, because the same habit will carry them to a third room if it continues. Our guide on whether clutter makes bedbugs worse covers what to move and what to leave while this is going on.

Confirm It Is the Same Problem
Before assuming the worst, check the second bed properly. Look along the mattress seams, under the label, at the corners of the base and at the headboard fixings. Dark spotting and shed skins are better evidence than bites, which vary from person to person and can come from other things. A pharmacist or GP can help with a skin reaction; 999 is for signs of a severe allergic one.
If you find nothing but the bites continue, an inspection from £120 will tell you whether that room has them and whether a third room is at risk.
Stop the Spread Getting Wider
- Everyone goes back to sleeping in their own bed, even in the affected rooms
- Bedding from each room is bagged in that room and taken straight to a hot wash
- Nothing moves from an affected bedroom into another one, including chairs and baskets
- Check every other bed in the house, including sofa beds and any spare room
Treating Two Rooms at Once
Both rooms need treating in the same course. Doing only the room with the most bites leaves the other to reinfest it within weeks.
Chemical treatment covers both bedrooms on each visit, usually two and sometimes three, spaced about 10–14 days apart, with floors cleared and bedding washed each time. Heat treatment takes each room to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive and kills eggs, usually in one day, which makes it attractive once more than one room is involved. It costs more than chemical, and the price goes up with each room either way.
When you ring about a Herne Hill house or flat, tell us who sleeps where now, who slept where a month ago, and which rooms have shown signs. That shapes the plan more than the size of the property. If a memory foam mattress is in one of the rooms, see our foam mattress guide. The Lambeth page covers the first steps for renters.
Bedbug Control Herne Hill — Questions
Will a third bedroom be next?
Not if people stop moving between beds and nothing is carried out of the affected rooms. Check the other beds so you know where you stand.
Can we treat the worst room now and the other later?
We would advise against it. Rooms treated separately tend to pass bedbugs back and forth between visits.
Is heat better when more than one room is affected?
Often, because each room is done in one visit with eggs included. Chemical still works if every visit in the course goes ahead.
How much does treating two bedrooms in Herne Hill cost?
Treatment is from £220 and rises with the number of rooms. We give you the exact figure, for heat or chemical, on the phone.
Should the person with the most bites sleep on the sofa?
No. That usually carries them into the living room. Stay in your own bed until the treatment is done.
