The First Hour After a Report
Take the room off sale and leave it as it is. Do not strip it, do not move the bed, and do not move the guest into the room next door with their suitcase unchecked; that is how one room becomes two. Offer the guest a room elsewhere in the building, and put their luggage in sealed bags before it goes anywhere.
Write down the room number, the date, what was reported and who saw it. If the guest has caught a bug, keep it. That note is what we work from, and it helps your own records. How the whole process works for a hotel, from report to reopening, is on the London hotel bedbug treatment page, for the full explanation.
Luggage Is the Route In
Guests near Waterloo tend to arrive straight from a train, a coach or a flight, and their bags go on the luggage rack, the floor or the second bed. Bedbugs rarely travel on people; they travel on bags and the things in them. That is why the luggage rack, the bed nearest the door and the headboard are where we look first in a hotel room.
It also means a room can be affected without anyone at the hotel doing anything wrong. That is worth knowing when a guest is upset: you can take the report seriously, act on it as soon as it reaches you, and still not accept that the room was dirty.

Heat or Chemical for a Hotel Room
Turnaround usually decides it. Heat clears a room in one visit, eggs included, and the room can go back on sale once it has cooled and been made up. It takes most of a day, and anything that heat damages, such as minibar stock, toiletries in aerosols and some electronics, has to come out first. Chemical takes one to two hours a visit and the room can be used again once dry, but it is a course of two or three visits about 10-14 days apart, so the room is watched for longer.
For a single room found early, many hotels choose heat so that the room is finished in one go. Where several rooms on a corridor are involved, we look at the pattern before recommending either. The heat and chemical pages for Lambeth describe each in a home setting, and the same work applies here.
The Rooms Around It
A bedbug in one room can reach the rooms either side and the ones above and below, along pipework and behind headboards fixed to a shared wall. When we treat a room, we ask to inspect its neighbours too. Most will be clear, and a clear room can stay on sale with a note on file.
Housekeeping staff are the people most likely to spot the next case. A short briefing helps: what spotting on a sheet or mattress seam looks like, where to look when a room is turned, and what to do if they find something. They should report it and leave the room, not strip it and carry the linen down the corridor. If the building manager wants every room checked at once, the Waterloo page explains what that kind of inspection involves.
Linen, Laundry and Lost Property
Bag the linen from an affected room in the room itself, seal it, and send it to be washed hot and dried on a hot cycle, kept apart from other rooms’ laundry. The same goes for anything left behind by the guest: bag it, label it and keep it sealed rather than putting it into the general lost property cupboard.
Quoting and Booking
Hotel work is quoted on the rooms involved and whether it is heat or chemical. Treatments start from £220, and inspections of neighbouring rooms start from £120. Ring 0800 955 1018 with the number of affected rooms and we give you the figure on the phone before anything is booked. We can often work around check-out and check-in; tell us the times that suit your front desk. For bedbugs in homes across the borough, see the Lambeth bedbug control page.

Hotel Bedbug Treatment Lambeth — Questions
Should we move the guest to the room next door?
Move them to a room away from the affected one if you can, and bag their luggage before it goes in.
Can the room be sold again the same night?
After heat, once it has cooled and been made up, often yes. After chemical, it can be used once dry, but it stays on a course of visits.
Do you need to check the whole floor?
Usually the rooms either side, above and below are enough to start with. The findings decide whether to look further.
What should housekeeping do if they find a bug?
Leave the room, close the door and report it. Do not strip the bed or carry linen out until it has been bagged in the room.
How is hotel work priced?
By the rooms involved and the treatment. Treatments start from £220 and the figure is given on the phone before booking.
