Talk to Them Before You Talk to Us
The person in the top-floor or back bedroom may be the one who noticed first, or the one who has not been told anything yet. Either way, have the conversation early and keep it free of blame. Someone who has just arrived from abroad with one suitcase can easily feel accused, and a helper who feels accused is less likely to mention the bites on their arm next week.
Whether your helper is new to Ealing Broadway or has been with you for years, explain what you have found, that it is nobody's fault until proven otherwise, and that their room will need to be looked at. Ask their permission before anyone goes through their drawers. Most people are relieved to be asked rather than told.
Their Room Counts as Much as Yours
In a tall Edwardian house the helper's room is often two floors away from the children's rooms, and families sometimes leave it off the list because it feels separate. It is not. The children run in and out of it, laundry from every floor meets in one basket, and the helper carries bags between rooms all day.

When we look at a house in Ealing Broadway we want to see every bedroom, including theirs, and the suitcase they arrived with. Luggage that has travelled a long way is worth a close look at the seams and the lining. If you would rather know what you are dealing with before any treatment is agreed, a bedbug inspection starts at £120.
Getting Their Room Ready
The preparation is the same as for any other bedroom, but let them do it or do it alongside them. The list that matters:
- Their bedding stripped, bagged in the room and hot-washed
- Clothes from the floor and the chair washed or bagged, not carried to the family's wardrobes
- For heat treatment: their medication, toiletry aerosols and any candles out of the room, and kept with them
- Personal documents and valuables somewhere they are comfortable with, because a room being worked in is not a private room
- The suitcase left in the room so it is treated with everything else
If they would like a few things washed at a launderette rather than mixed in with the family's washing, that is fine too. Hot wash and a full tumble dry is what counts.
Choosing the Treatment for a Busy House
A house where one adult looks after the children during the day usually has little room for a plan that runs across two or three visits. Heat usually finishes in one visit and kills the eggs, and every room can be back in use once it has cooled. Chemical treatment costs less and suits one contained room, with a follow-up visit about ten to fourteen days later. We will say which fits once we know how many rooms show signs.
For the wider question of fitting treatment around a family's routine, the Ealing borough page goes further. If a child has come home from a night away with bites, see bedbugs found after a sleepover.
Bedbug Control Ealing Broadway — Questions
Should our au pair sleep somewhere else until it is treated?
Usually not. Moving to another room or a friend's flat tends to carry them with the bedding and clothes. Staying in their own bed until the treatment keeps the problem where it is.
Can we treat the family rooms and leave the helper's room for later?
We would advise against it. A room left untreated keeps supplying the rest of the house, and you end up paying for a second round.
Who should be at home on the day?
One adult who can let us in and answer questions. The helper does not have to be there, but it helps if they know the day and have taken out anything of theirs that needs removing.
How much does it cost for a house in Ealing Broadway?
Treatments start at £220. The figure depends on the number of rooms and on heat or chemical, and we give it to you on the phone before anything is booked.
Our au pair has bites and nobody else does. Is that possible?
Yes. People react very differently and some do not react at all. A pharmacist or GP can advise on the bites; call 999 if anyone shows signs of a severe allergic reaction.
