Where They Go When There Is No Frame
On a raised bed, bedbugs gather in the corners of the base and the joints of the frame. On the floor, they spread out along different lines:
- The underside of the mattress, where it touches the floor
- The folds and the tufting of a futon, especially along the crease where it bends into a sofa
- The slats and hinges of a futon frame
- The edge of the carpet and the gap under the skirting nearest the bed
- Books, bags and clothes piled beside the mattress
In a Northfields bedroom or anywhere else, lift the mattress and look underneath in good light. Spotting on the underside and on the floor under it is the most common sign with a floor bed.

A futon that doubles as a sofa during the day is worth extra attention. People sit on it with bags and coats, guests sleep on it, and it gets folded and unfolded, which pushes bedbugs deeper into the crease. Check along the fold line and the underside of the frame where the slats meet the hinges.
What to Do Straight Away
Leave the mattress or futon in the room. It is tempting to drag it out to the bin, but carrying it through the flat spreads them, and a new one on the same floor will be found within days. Strip and bag the covers and bedding in the room and put them through a hot wash and a full dry.
Clear the floor around the bed as far as you can, bagging what you pick up. Do not move to the sofa or another room to escape the bites; they follow, and then two rooms need treating.
How a Floor Bed Is Treated
Heat treatment suits a floor bed well, because the whole room comes up to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive, including the carpet under the mattress and the thick folds of a futon. A thermal camera shows us any cold spots, and a dense futon is one of the places we watch. It kills eggs and usually takes one visit.
With chemical treatment, the residual goes into the carpet edges, the skirting and the futon frame. The mattress itself is treated along its seams. It usually needs a second visit, sometimes a third, about ten to fourteen days apart, and the floor has to be clear each time.
Afterwards
Many people in Northfields flats decide after treatment to get a simple bed frame. That is a good idea: a raised bed with the bedding kept off the floor and away from the wall is much easier to check. Until then, check the underside of the mattress every few days for a month.

Bedbug Control Northfields — Questions
Can a futon be treated, or does it have to go?
Usually it can be treated in place. Do not throw it out before treatment unless we advise it.
Should I put the mattress up on something now?
Not before treatment. Moving it about disturbs them. Once the room is treated, a frame makes future checks much easier.
Do you treat the whole carpet?
With chemical we concentrate on the edges and the area around the bed. With heat the whole room, carpet included, is brought up to temperature.
I have bites but cannot find anything under the mattress. Now what?
Look along the carpet edge and skirting too, and at anything stored beside the bed. If you still find nothing, an inspection from £120 answers it before you pay for treatment.
What does it cost in Northfields?
Treatments start at £220. The figure depends on the number of rooms and heat or chemical, and we give it on the phone first.
