How They Hitch a Ride
Bedbugs do not jump or fly, and they do not live on skin. They crawl into folds and seams. A work bag set down by a bed, a coat laid over a chair, a pile of bedding carried against your uniform: those are the moments they get picked up. Most of what follows is about those few moments.

A Working Routine
- Keep your bag off the floor and furniture. A hard surface in the kitchen or hall, or a hook, is better than a bedroom carpet or a sofa.
- Carry only what you need into a room. Leave the bag, coat and spare kit in the car or at the door.
- Handle bedding away from your body. Bag used linen in the room before carrying it anywhere.
- Use a wipeable bag. A plastic or coated bag is easier to check than fabric with lots of pockets.
- Change and wash at home. Work clothes go straight into a bag at the door and into a hot wash, then a hot tumble dry.
If you drive between clients, keep a plastic box in the boot for bags and coats rather than putting them on the seats.
When a Client Has Bedbugs
Tell whoever manages the client’s care, or the client or their family if you work privately, and say what you saw. Be kind about it; nobody chooses to have them. Treatment for that home is for them or whoever looks after the property to arrange, but you can tighten your routine at that address straight away.
A client who is housebound or unwell may find the preparation hard, especially for chemical treatment, where bedding is stripped and floors cleared. Heat treatment is usually one visit but needs heat-sensitive items, such as medication, taken out and the room empty for most of a day. Chemical treatment is shorter on the day, and people can return once it is dry. The Enfield borough page covers treatment for people who cannot easily be out of the house.
If You Find Them at Home
Do not stop working in a panic, and do not move to another bed. Check your own bed properly with our step-by-step guide, and let your employer know so clients can be protected while it is dealt with. Keep to the routine above in reverse: nothing from your bedroom goes to work unwashed.
Treatments in Ponders End and across Enfield start at £220, and we give the price on the phone. If you are not sure what you have found, an inspection starts from £120.
Bedbug Control Ponders End — Questions
Do I need to tell my employer?
It is sensible to. They can adjust visits and protect other clients, and it shows you are acting responsibly.
Can I bring bedbugs home on my clothes?
It is possible, which is why work clothes go straight into a bag at the door and then a hot wash and dry.
Should I refuse to visit a client with bedbugs?
That is between you and your employer. With a careful routine, many carers keep working while the home is treated.
Does a care agency uniform need special washing?
Follow your employer’s instructions for the fabric, but where the label allows, the hottest wash and a hot tumble dry are what deal with bedbugs. Bag the uniform at the door until it goes in.
Can my client stay in the house during treatment?
For chemical treatment they can return once surfaces are dry. For heat, the room must be empty for most of the day. We talk it through with whoever is arranging it.
