What Actually Travels
Bedbugs do not live on people. They hide in the things that sit near a bed overnight and then get picked up in the morning: an overnight bag left on the floor, a coat on the end of the bed, a soft toy, a school bag, pyjamas stuffed in with everything else.
So the aim is simple. Anything that sleeps in the affected house and then leaves it needs to be washed, dried hot or checked before it arrives at the other door. The Enfield borough page looks more widely at bedbugs moving between households.

A Handover Routine That Works
- Pack from clean. In the affected house, pack straight from the tumble dryer into a sealed plastic bag, not from a drawer in the bedroom.
- Keep the bag off beds and carpets. A hard floor, a table or the hall is better than the bedroom floor.
- Unpack at the door. At the receiving house, clothes go straight into the wash and the bag gets a quick look along its seams.
- Hard-case where you can. A plastic box or a wipeable bag is easier to check than a fabric holdall with pockets.
- Keep it the same every time. A routine a child can follow is more reliable than one that depends on whoever is doing the pick-up remembering.
Where the Child Sleeps Matters
It is tempting to keep a child away from the affected house altogether, or to have them sleep in a parent’s bed there instead of their own. Both can make things worse. Bedbugs that lose their host tend to spread out looking for another, so an empty child’s bed can push them into the next room.
If the child’s own bed is the affected one, ring us before changing any sleeping arrangements, and we will tell you what makes sense for that house. Whatever you decide, check the beds in both houses the same way; our step-by-step bed check shows how.
Talking to the Other Household
This is often the hardest part, especially between separated parents or with a grandparent who is embarrassed. Keep it about the child, not about blame. Bedbugs have nothing to do with how clean a home is; our guide on whether bedbugs are a sign of a dirty home can help if that is the worry. Agree the handover routine, agree that both houses check the beds, and agree to tell each other straight away if either finds anything.
Many homes in Southgate are interwar houses with a child’s room off a shared landing. If one house needs treating, heat treatment deals with eggs as well as live bugs in one visit, which helps when the child is due back in a few days. Chemical treatment costs less but means two or three visits, so plan the handovers around them.
Bedbug Control Southgate — Questions
Should the child stop visiting the affected house?
Usually not. Stopping visits can make the bedbugs spread within that house, and it does not protect the other home any better than a good handover routine does.
Do both houses need treating?
Only if both have bedbugs. Check the beds in the second house; if you are unsure, an inspection from £120 will tell you.
Can bedbugs travel in a school bag?
They can, if the bag spends the night near an affected bed. Keep it out of the bedroom and check the seams.
My child is being bitten but nobody else is. Why?
People react differently, and some do not react at all, so others in the house may be bitten without marks. A pharmacist or GP can help with the bites.
How much will it cost?
Treatments start at £220. The figure depends on the number of rooms and whether it is heat or chemical, and we give it on the phone before booking.
