Why the Household Might Not Notice
Some people have no visible reaction to bedbug bites at all. Others react only after being bitten a few times, or the reaction fades with repeated bites. A family can live with a low number of bedbugs for months without knowing, while someone new reacts strongly after one night.
So a guest with bites is not proof of bedbugs, but it is a reason to check. Mosquitoes, fleas from a pet or a reaction to unfamiliar bedding can also be behind it.

Check the Guest Bed First
Start with the bed the visitor used. Strip it, then go along the mattress seams and piping with a torch, lift the mattress and look at the base and the frame joints, and check behind the headboard. Look for small dark spots, pale cast skins, tiny eggs or the bugs themselves. Our step-by-step bed check sets out the order.
A spare room that is rarely used can hold bedbugs without anyone noticing, because there is nobody sleeping there to bite most of the time. For how long they can wait, see why bedbugs reappear.
Then Check Your Own Beds
If the guest slept on a sofa bed or in someone else’s room, check there. Then check the other beds in the house, including your own. If nobody reacts, the signs on the mattress are the only way you will find out.
If you find nothing but visitors keep getting bitten, an inspection from £120 gives you a definite answer. It is also useful if you want to reassure family before the next visit.
Before the Next Visitor Comes
If the check turns up nothing, you do not have to stop having people to stay. Make up the guest bed with pale sheets, which show spotting far more clearly than dark ones, and ask your visitor, without making a drama of it, to mention anything they notice. Look over the mattress again the morning they leave.
Keep a short note of each stay: who slept where, and whether they had bites afterwards. If the same bed keeps coming up, that tells us where to start. If bites follow visitors whichever room they use, the answer may be the sofa or a chair everyone sits on in the evening rather than a bed.
If It Turns Out to Be Bedbugs
Treat the rooms that show signs, not the whole house by default. Chemical treatment suits one contained room over two or three visits, while heat treatment deals with eggs as well in one visit and costs more. Treatments in Cockfosters and across Enfield start at £220, and we give the figure on the phone first. Let recent guests know, kindly, so they can check their own luggage and beds.
Bedbug Control Cockfosters — Questions
Why do I never get bitten?
You may be bitten but not react. It is common, and it means the only reliable evidence is on the bed itself.
Could the guest have brought them?
Yes. If they had bites before arriving, their luggage may be the source. Check the guest room and their luggage area either way.
Should I tell guests who stayed recently?
Yes, if you find bedbugs. It lets them check their own homes early, when it is easier to deal with.
Do we need to wash everything in the house?
No. Hot-wash the bedding from any bed that shows signs, and the guest linen after each stay. Wardrobes in rooms with no signs can be left alone.
Can I just stop using the spare room?
Leaving the room empty does not get rid of them, and they may move to other rooms in search of someone to feed on.
