Before Anyone Arrives
The point is to make it easy for guests to keep their things away from beds and sofas without making anyone feel inspected.
- Give luggage a place. A hallway, a hard floor or a cleared corner of each room, with suitcases on a luggage rack, a chair or a sheet of plastic rather than on the bed.
- Make up beds with fresh linen that you can strip and wash hot as soon as the guests leave.
- Clear under the beds in the rooms guests will use, so you can see the floor and the frame later.
- Think about airbeds and sofa beds. They are easy to check if they are clean to begin with; look them over before they go out.
Many houses in Winchmore Hill are interwar semis where a celebration means every bedroom, the living room and sometimes the loft are in use at once, which is exactly why a plan helps.

If a Guest Mentions Bites
It happens. Someone mentions they have had bites since a trip, or wakes up in your house with marks. Keep it low-key and practical. Ask where they slept, look along the seams of that mattress and the joints of the bed frame, and check their luggage area. Bites alone prove nothing, as people react in very different ways.
If a relative turns out to be the source, the conversation can be awkward. Our guide on whether bedbugs are a sign of a dirty home helps take the shame out of it, for them and for you.
After Everyone Has Gone
- Strip every bed and sofa bed guests used. Bag the linen in the room and take it straight to the machine for a hot wash and hot dry.
- Look over each bed. Mattress seams, frame joints and the headboard, with a torch. Our step-by-step bed check shows the order.
- Check the luggage spots. The floor edges and skirting where suitcases stood.
- Deflate and check airbeds before folding them away, paying attention to the seams and valve area.
- Repeat the check a week or two later. Bedbugs brought in over a weekend may not show for a while.
If You Find Something
Photograph it and ring us before you move furniture or bin anything. If it is one guest room, chemical treatment in two or three visits usually suits. If several rooms were in use and more than one shows signs, heat treatment in a single visit is often the better route, though it costs more. Treatments start at £220, and we give the figure on the phone once we know the rooms. The Enfield page has more for family homes.
Bedbug Control Winchmore Hill — Questions
Should I ask guests to check their bags before coming?
You can mention it lightly if someone has recently travelled. Most hosts find it easier to set up a luggage area and check afterwards.
What about children sharing beds or sleeping on the floor?
Sleeping bags and mattresses on the floor are easy to check. Wash the sleeping bags hot afterwards and look along the seams of any floor mattress before it goes back into storage.
Can a guest bring bedbugs in a single night?
Yes. A few can walk out of a bag overnight. That is why the checks after the visit matter.
Do I need to treat the whole house after a party?
No. Only rooms showing signs need treatment. Checking every bed guests used tells you which those are.
What should I do with borrowed airbeds?
Check them before and after use, especially along the seams, and wipe them down before folding them away.
Is an inspection worth it afterwards?
If you are unsure what you have found, yes. Inspections start from £120 and tell you which rooms, if any, need treating.
