The Three Usual Suspects
- Bedbugs. Flat, oval, reddish-brown, about the size of an apple pip. They live in the bed, the frame and nearby furniture and leave dark spotting on seams.
- Bird mites. Tiny, pale or reddish, barely visible, and fast-moving. They come from nests in the eaves, gutters or loft, and often appear on walls, ceilings or window frames.
- Bat bugs. Very similar to bedbugs in size and look. They live with bats in roof spaces and wander down when the bats move on.
From across the room, a bat bug and a bedbug are hard to tell apart, even for people who have seen both. A specimen in a sealed pot or a sharp photograph lets us check properly.

Clues That Point Away From Bedbugs
A few things suggest the problem is coming from outside the bed. Bites that start soon after a nest was removed or the birds fledged. Small moving specks on the ceiling or around a window rather than in the mattress. Activity in a bedroom right under the eaves or the loft hatch. No spotting on the seams even after a careful look.
None of those rules bedbugs out, but together they make it worth checking before paying for treatment. Our guide on checking your own bed tells you where to look, and the London guide on bedbugs or something else covers other lookalikes.
Why It Matters for Treatment
If it is bird mites or bat bugs, treating the bed on its own misses the source. The nest or roost is where the answer lies, and bats are protected, so a roost must not be disturbed without proper advice. Your local authority or a bat conservation body can tell you where to start.
It is also possible to have both. A house can pick up bedbugs from luggage or second-hand furniture in the same summer that birds nest under the roof. That is why we look at what is in the bed and what is on the walls and ceiling separately, rather than assuming one explanation covers every bite in the house.
If it is bedbugs, the usual approach applies. Chemical treatment works on a single room across two or three visits; heat clears every life stage in one. Treatments in Enfield Lock start at £220, with the figure given on the phone.
Getting a Definite Answer
The quickest route is often to send us a photograph. If that does not settle it, an inspection from £120 means someone goes through the room and tells you what is there before you spend money on the wrong treatment. The Enfield borough page has more for households across the borough.
Bedbug Control Enfield Lock — Questions
Can bird mites live in my bed?
They can wander onto beds, but they do not settle and breed there the way bedbugs do. Without birds they tend to die out.
How do I catch a specimen?
Press clear tape over it or tip it into a small sealed pot, then photograph it in good light and send it to us.
We removed a nest last month. Could that be the cause?
It could. Parasites often appear indoors after a nest is emptied. Mention the timing when you ring.
Should I spray the room myself?
Not before you know what it is. Shop sprays can scatter bedbugs and do nothing about a nest in the roof.
The bites are only in the bedroom under the loft. Does that mean anything?
It can. A roost or nest above one room often shows up in that room first. Check the bed there carefully, and look for movement around the ceiling, light fitting and loft hatch.
Will you deal with the birds or bats?
No. We deal with bedbugs. If the source is a nest or roost, you need the right advice for that, especially with bats.
