When One Room Can Be Enough
If the problem is caught early, the bedbugs are confined to your bed and the area immediately around it, and the rooms either side are clear when someone looks, treating a single room is a reasonable plan. Chemical treatment is often used for exactly this: the residual goes into the bed, the frame and the skirtings, and the follow-up visit catches whatever has hatched since.
A light residual at the edges of the room, along the skirting by the door and where the walls meet the floor, can be added to reduce the chance of anything wandering in or out.
When It Usually Is Not
- A housemate in the next room has bites or has found spotting
- You or others have been sleeping on the lounge sofa
- Bedding, clothes or furniture have moved between rooms since the bites started
- Your bed sits against a wall shared with another bedroom and the signs reach the skirting there
- Nobody has checked the rest of the house at all
In any of those cases, treating your room alone tends to leave a source next door, and they come back. That is not a failure of the treatment, it is the plan being too small.

Asking for the Rest of the House to Be Checked
The fair middle ground is usually to have the neighbouring rooms and the shared spaces looked at before deciding. An inspection from £120 covers that, and it gives the landlord a clear account of which rooms need treating rather than a guess from either side.
Put your request in writing: what you have found, when the bites started, and that you would like the adjoining rooms checked. Who arranges and pays depends on your tenancy and on what caused it; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers. What we can do is write down what we find, room by room, which is useful to everyone in the house in Clapton, not only you.
If the landlord agrees to a wider check, make sure the shared rooms are included as well as the bedrooms. The lounge sofa and the hallway are where housemates’ belongings cross paths, and they are easy to leave off a list. The Hackney page has more on shared homes where people come and go.
Getting Your Own Room Ready
Whatever the landlord decides, keep sleeping in your own bed. Moving onto the sofa or into a friend’s room is the usual way one affected room becomes two. Wash and hot-dry your bedding, keep clothes off the floor, and do not carry bags or furniture into the shared parts of the house until it is done. If the house is about to change hands between tenants, the Dalston page is worth reading too.
Bedbug Control Clapton — Questions
My landlord says it must have come in with me. Is that right?
It may or may not be. Bedbugs can take weeks to become noticeable, so timing alone does not prove where they came from.
Can I book the inspection myself?
Yes. Anyone can book one, and the findings are yours to share with the landlord and the house.
Would heat treatment make a single room more likely to work?
It deals with eggs in one visit, so nothing is left to hatch in your room. It does not reach bedbugs in the room next door any more than chemical does.
How much is one room in Clapton?
Treatments start at £220. The figure rises with the number of rooms, and heat costs more than chemical. You get it on the phone first.
Should I throw my mattress out to show I am dealing with it?
No. A mattress can usually be treated, and carrying one through a shared house spreads them to the hallway and the stairs.
