Why the Bed Is a Poor Place for Coats
Most of your guests will not have bedbugs, and most coats that come from a home that does will not be carrying any. But a pile of twenty coats and bags gives the odds plenty of chances, and a mattress with a duvet on it is exactly the soft, seamed, warm place an insect crawling out of a pocket would stop in.
The same goes the other way. If your own flat has a problem you have not spotted yet, a guest’s coat left on your bed is the easiest way for it to go home with them.

Setting Up Before People Arrive
- Put a clothes rail or a row of hooks in the hallway for coats
- Use hard chairs or a clear bit of floor for bags, away from beds and sofas
- Keep bedroom doors shut if you can, so the bed does not become the fallback
- If people are staying over, give them a spot for their bags that is not on the bed
None of this needs to spoil the evening in Hackney Wick. It is a question of where things are put down, not of checking anyone at the door.
The Morning After
If the bed did end up as the cloakroom, it takes very little to deal with the risk. Strip the bed and put the bedding through a hot wash and a hot tumble dry. Run the vacuum along the mattress seams and the gap between the mattress and the frame, then tie the vacuum bag or empty the canister into a sealed bag and take it outside. Anything a guest left behind goes into a bag until they collect it.
If Signs Turn Up Weeks Later
Bedbugs are slow to make themselves known, so if something did come in, you may not notice until several weeks after the party. Our guide to the bedbug life cycle explains why. Look for small dark spots along the mattress piping, pale shed skins, or bites in lines or clusters, and see what colour bedbugs are if you are not sure what you have found.
Do not start sleeping somewhere else; that usually spreads them. An inspection from £120 confirms it before you pay for treatment. If it is caught early and confined to one bed, chemical treatment is often enough. If it has had time to spread, heat treatment deals with every stage in one visit and costs more. Treatments in Hackney Wick start at £220, with the figure depending on the rooms involved.
Whether to tell your guests is your call. If you have found bedbugs and people’s coats were on the bed, a short message suggesting they put that coat through a hot tumble dry is a kind thing to send, and most people would rather know. The Hackney page has more on belongings arriving from elsewhere.
Bedbug Control Hackney Wick — Questions
Is it worth washing every guest's coat after a party?
No. Keep coats off the bed in the first place, and if they were on it, strip and wash your own bedding. You cannot do much about coats that have already gone home.
A friend told me after the party that they have bedbugs. What now?
Check your bed and anywhere their things were left over the next few weeks. If you find anything, ring us before moving furniture around.
Can a vacuum get rid of them?
It picks up some, which helps, but it does not reach eggs glued into seams and it is not a treatment.
How much does treatment in Hackney Wick cost?
Treatments start at £220. The number of rooms and heat or chemical decide the figure, which you hear on the phone before anything is booked.
