Why One Lodger's Room Is Rarely the Whole Story
In a house where rooms are let, people pass through each other's space all day. They share a sofa in the evening, leave coats on the same hooks and carry laundry up and down the same stairs. Bedbugs found in one lodger's bed may have come from there, or may simply be where they were first noticed.
So before anyone decides whose fault it is, find out how far it has gone. Every bedroom is worth a look, and the owner's room most of all, because it is the one people tend to skip. An inspection from £120 checks each room and tells you which ones actually need treating.

Talking to the People Who Rent From You
Lodgers who find bites often say nothing for a week, worried they will be blamed or asked to leave. Make it easy for them to come to you early. Tell everyone in the house at the same time, in plain words, and put the dates of any visit in writing.
- Say which rooms will be checked and when, so nobody is caught out
- Ask each person not to move their mattress, bed or bags between rooms
- Explain that sleeping in the lounge or at a friend's usually spreads them
- Agree who will let us into rooms if a lodger is out at work
Who pays depends on the letting arrangement and on how the bedbugs got in. We are pest controllers rather than legal advisers, so if that is in dispute, get proper advice on the tenancy side. Later, when a room comes free, our guide on telling a new lodger about past bedbugs covers what to keep and say.
Heat or Chemical in a House You Share
Heat treatment suits a let house when several rooms are involved, because every affected room can be done in one visit. The catch is that everyone has to be out for most of that day and has to take heat-sensitive things out of their room beforehand. Heat costs more than chemical.
Chemical treatment is usually two, sometimes three visits about ten to fourteen days apart. It works well when each person keeps to the preparation: floors cleared, bedding stripped and hot-washed, and back in the room once it is dry. In an Uxbridge house with four or five lodgers, the weak point is the one room where that did not happen, so ask everyone to confirm they are ready the evening before.
The Rooms Nobody Owns
Shared spaces get forgotten. The lounge sofa, the dining chairs and the hall where bags are dropped are all places we look at on the day. If one of them shows signs, it is treated as part of the job. For more on households with people coming and going, see the Hillingdon borough page.
Bedbug Control Uxbridge — Questions
Can I go into a lodger's room to check for bedbugs?
That depends on your arrangement with them, and it is better done with their agreement. Ask them, explain why, and check together if you can.
Should the lodger with bites move out until it is treated?
No. Moving to another room or another address usually spreads them. Keeping them in their own bed keeps the problem where it is.
Do you treat my own bedroom even if I have no bites?
We look at it. Some people do not react to bites at all, so no marks is not the same as no bedbugs. It is treated only if we find signs.
How is a shared house in Uxbridge priced?
Treatments start at £220. The figure depends on how many rooms need doing and whether it is heat or chemical, and you hear it on the phone before anything is booked.
A lodger has had a skin reaction. What should they do?
A pharmacist or GP can help with the bites. Anyone showing signs of a severe allergic reaction needs 999.
