Where They Are Likely to Be Now
A mattress is where people look, but bedbugs spread out into whatever is close to the sleeper. With the bed gone, the ones left behind are usually in:
- The skirting and carpet edge where the bed stood
- The headboard, if it was fixed to the wall and stayed
- Bedside tables, especially drawer joints and the backs
- Curtain hems, picture frames and plug sockets near the bed
- The landing, stairs and hall along the route the mattress took out
Without a person in that bed, they will now go looking for one. That means the next room along, or the sofa where you are currently sleeping.

What to Do This Week
- Hold off on the new bed. A new mattress in an untreated room is simply a new place for them to live. Wait until the room has been treated.
- Deal with the old one if it is still outside. Wrap it, and mark it clearly so nobody takes it home. If a collection is booked, mention bedbugs.
- Do not scatter the household. Moving people into different rooms or to relatives usually spreads them further. Ring us before deciding where anyone sleeps.
- Wash what was on the bed. Bedding, pillows and throws go into a hot wash and a hot dryer.
- Leave the bedroom furniture where it is. The bedside tables and the chest of drawers do not need to follow the mattress out.
Why an Inspection Makes Sense Here
Once the bed is gone, the obvious evidence has gone with it. An inspection from £120 checks the room, the route the bed went out and any room where someone has slept since. That tells you how many rooms need treating, which is what sets the price.
It is also the moment to find out where the bedbugs came from, if that is possible. A second-hand bed, a recent guest or a trip away are the usual suspects. Knowing which one it was changes what you check once the new bed is in, and whether anyone else needs a quiet word. The Hillingdon page covers guests and travel as routes in.
Treating a Room With No Bed In It
Chemical treatment works by leaving a residue in the places bedbugs hide and relying on them to cross it on their way to someone. With no bed and nobody sleeping in the room, that is slower and less certain, and it is usually two or three visits about ten to fourteen days apart.
Heat treatment does not depend on anyone being in the room. The whole space is brought up to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive, eggs included, usually in one visit. It costs more than chemical. For many Yiewsley households in this position, it means the new bed can go in soon after. For why the rest of a house matters, see how far bedbugs travel from the bed.
Bedbug Control Yiewsley — Questions
Was I wrong to throw the mattress out?
It is done, so do not worry about it. The rule for next time is to keep the bed until we have looked, because moving it spreads them.
When can the new bed be delivered?
After the room has been treated. With heat, that is usually once the room has cooled. With chemical, ask us, because the course runs over several weeks.
I am sleeping on the sofa. Is that a problem?
It can become one, because bedbugs follow the sleeper. Tell us when you ring so the sofa is looked at as part of the job.
How much will it cost in Yiewsley?
Treatments start at £220. The figure depends on how many rooms need doing and on heat or chemical, and you hear it on the phone before anything is booked.
