What Is Different About These Rooms
Conversions vary a great deal, so treat this as what we look for rather than what you will find. Common features include:
- An infilled front wall where the garage door used to be, sometimes with a gap at the base
- A raised timber floor or a thin layer over the old concrete slab
- Boxed-in pipes, meters or a boiler in one corner
- A connecting door into the hall or kitchen, often with a wide gap under it
- Storage the rest of the house has pushed in: boxes, a chest freezer, spare furniture
Each of those gives bedbugs somewhere to sit away from the bed, and the boxes in particular are easy to overlook.

Getting the Room Ready
Whichever treatment you choose, the stored items are the first problem. Anything in cardboard boxes near the bed should be checked before it is moved, not carried into the house to get it out of the way. If you are not sure whether bedbugs have reached the rest of the house, an inspection from £120 settles that first.
For chemical treatment, the floor is cleared so the edges can be reached, and the bedding is stripped and hot-washed. Treatment goes into seams, frames and skirtings, and in a conversion that includes the base of the old door infill and the edges of any boxing. It is usually two, sometimes three visits about ten to fourteen days apart.
Heat in a Room With Outside Walls
A converted garage usually has more outside wall than a bedroom upstairs, and some are less well insulated than the original house. That does not rule out heat treatment, but it is why the thermal camera matters. The technician looks for the corners and floor edges that lag behind and moves fans until they come up to a temperature bedbugs cannot survive.
Before the day, heat-sensitive things come out: aerosols, paint tins, candles, medication, plants and some electronics. In a room that doubles as storage, that list is often longer than people expect, so go through it the week before. A chest freezer or a boiler cupboard needs mentioning when you book. Heat costs more than chemical and is usually one visit that takes most of a day.
The Door Into the House
The connecting door is the route into the rest of a Ruislip home. Until the room is treated, keep it shut, keep bags and laundry from crossing it loose, and do not move the person sleeping there into a bedroom upstairs. Bedbug Control Ruislip — Questions
Should the person in the converted garage sleep upstairs for now?
No. Moving them usually takes the bedbugs with them into the main house. Keep them in their own bed until the room is treated.
Can you treat the boxes stored in the room?
With heat, items left in the room are treated with it, once heat-sensitive things are out. With chemical, we treat the room and you sort the contents, so fewer boxes makes a better job.
Does a cold, draughty conversion stop heat treatment working?
It makes the job slower rather than impossible. The thermal camera shows where the room is lagging and the fans are moved to reach it.
What does it cost for one converted room in Ruislip?
Treatments start at £220. The figure depends on how many rooms and on heat or chemical, and you hear it on the phone before anything is booked.
